S 18 (69) Al-Kahf

1 Praise be to Lah who has sent down upon his slave the book and has not made crookedness for it. 2 Valuable that he may warn of severe horribleness from him and give good news to the believers, who do the righteous deeds, that theirs is a good wage, 3 Staying therein indefinitely, 4 And to warn those who have said: Allah took a child. 5 They have no knowledge of it nor their fathers. A word coming out of their mouths was big. They say nothing but a lie. 6 So perhaps you will destroy yourself over their tracks, if they have not believed in this hadith, with regret. 7 We made what is on the Earth an ornament for it to test them which of them is best in work. 8 And we are making what is on it a barren plateau. 9 Or did you think that the companions of the cave and the raqim were of our signs, wonderful? 10 When the boys were headed to the cave and they said: Our lord, give us mercy from you and prepare us a right way from our affair. 11 So we struck over their ears in the cave a number of years. 12 Then we raised them that we might know which of the two parties counted for what they had remained in extent. 13 We relate their news to you in truth. They are youths; they believed in their lord and we increased them in guidance. 14 And we attached upon their hearts when they stood up and said: Our lord is the lord of the skies and the Earth. We shall not invoke a god instead of him. We would have then said a trespass. 15 These our people have taken gods instead of him. Why do they not come upon them with clear authority? So who is more unjust than he who has fabricated a lie against Allah? 16 And when you have withdrawn from them and what they worship except Allah, look for shelter at the cave. Your lord spreads some of his mercy for you and facilitates for you some of your affair as a convenience. 17 And you see the sun when it rose declining from their cave to the right and when it set departing from them to the left while they are in a gap thereof. That is of Allah’s signs. Him whom Allah guides, he is the guided and him whom he misguides, you will not find a guiding protector for him. 18 And you think them awake while they are asleep. And we turn them to the right and to the left and their dog stretching his arms at the threshold. Had you looked at them you would have turned away from them in flight and been filled with terror because of them. 19 And thus we raised them that they might question among them. A speaker among them said: How long have you remained? They said: We have remained a day or part of a day. They said: Your lord is a knower of what you have remained. So send one of you with this silver of yours to the city, let him see which is the purest food, let him bring you provision from it and let him proceed slowly. And do not let anyone inform of you. 20 They, if they become clear about you, will stone you or return you to your cult. And you will then never succeed. 21 And thus did we lead to them that they might know that Allah’s promise is true and that the Hour, there is no doubt therein. When they dispute about their affair among themselves and they said: Build a building over them. Their lord is a knower of them. Those who had overcome concerning their affair said: We will take a masjid over them. 22 They will say: Three, the fourth of them their dog; and they say: Five, the sixth of them their dog. A conjecture about the ghayb. And they say: Seven, and the eighth of them their dog. Say: My lord knows their ‘iddah. None knows them but a few. So do not argue about them except with a clear argument. And do not enquire about them from anyone among them. 23 And do not say of a thing: I am doing that tomorrow 24 Except: That Allah wills. And remember your lord when you have forgotten and say: Perhaps my lord will guide me to a nearer way than this, a right path. 25 And they remained in their cave for 300 years and they increased it by nine. 26 Say: Allah knows by what they remained. His is the ghayb of the skies and the Earth. See it and hear! They have no protector instead of him nor does he associate someone in his judgment. 27 And read what you have been inspired with of your lord’s book. None changes his words and you will not find a refuge instead of him. 28 And be patient, yourself, with those who invoke their lord in the morning and the evening, wanting his face. And do not let your eyes return from them, wanting the adornment of the dunya life, and do not obey him whose heart we have let slip from our dhikr and has followed his desire and his affair was a furut. 29 And say: The truth from your lord so he who has willed, let him believe and he who has willed, let him disbelieve. We have prepared for the wrongdoers a fire which has surrounded them, and its marquee. And if they seek aid they relieve with water like molten copper which cooks the faces. Miserable was the drink and evil as a support. 30 Those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds, we do not squander the wage of him who has done well in deed. 31 Those, theirs are Jannat of ‘Adn, rivers running beneath them. They are adorned therein with bracelets of gold and wear green garments of sundus and istabraq, reclining therein on the couches. Excellent was the reward and good as a support. 32 And coin for them a similitude of two men. We assigned to one of them two jannat of grapes and we enclosed them with date palms and put a plantation between them. 33 Both of the jannat gave their food and did not do wrong from it at all and we let a river pour forth in their midst. 34 And he had fruit. So he said to his companion while he was conversing with him: I am more than you in money and stronger in a group. 35 And he entered his jannah while he was wrong to himself. He said: I do not think that this will ever perish. 36 And I do not think the Hour is coming. And if I have been returned to my lord I shall find better than it as a recourse. 37 His companion said to him while he was conversing with him: Have you disbelieved in the one who created you from dirt then from a drop then smoothed you as a man? 38 But we, he is Allah, my lord, and I do not associate anyone with my lord. 39 And why did you not when you entered your jannah say: Mashallah, there is no power except in Allah? If you see me less than you in money and child. 40 So perhaps my lord will give me better than your jannah and send upon it an assumption from the sky and it becomes a plateau, a slippery place. 41 Or its water becomes a depression so you will not be able to--a search for it. 42 And he was surrounded by his fruit so he came to be wringing his hands over what he had spent on it and it was empty on its trellises and he says: Would that I had not associated anyone with my lord. 43 And he had no group helping him instead of Allah and he was not strongly established. 44 There is the protection of Lah’s, the true. He is better in reward and better in result. 45 And coin for them the similitude of the dunya life. Like water that we have sent down from the sky then the vegetation of the Earth was mingled with it then it became chaff which the winds scatter. And Allah was capable over everything. 46 Money and sons are the adornment of the dunya life and the lasting things of good things is better with your lord as a reward and better as hope. 47 And on a day we make the mountains roll round and you see the Earth prominent and we gathered them and we did not leave anyone of them. 48 And they were displayed to your lord in a row. You have come to us as we created you the first time. Rather, you claimed we would not make you an appointment. 49 And the book was placed and you see the criminals abject from what is therein and they say: Woe is us! What is this book that does not leave a minor sin or a major except it has enumerated it? And they found what they had done present. And your lord does not wrong anyone. 50 And when we said to the angels: Do sujud to Adam. So they did sujud except Iblis. He was of the jinn. And he acted immorally against his lord’s command. So do you take him and his offspring as protectors instead of me when they are an enemy to you? Miserable was an exchange for the wrongdoers. 51 I did not appeal to them as a witness to the creation of the skies and the Earth nor the creation of themselves nor was I the taker of misleaders as an upper arm. 52 And on a day he says: Invoke my partners, those whom you have claimed. Then they invoked them but they did not respond to them. And we put a place of destruction between them. 53 And the criminals saw the fire and thought that they were going to fall into it. And they did not find a way out from it. 54 And we have explained in this quran for people from every similitude. And man was an argument in most things. 55 And nothing prevented people from believing when the guidance came to them and asking for forgiveness of their lord except that the sunnah of the first ones comes to them or the torture comes to them in various kinds. 56 And we do not send the commissaries except as bearers of good news and warners. And those who have disbelieved argue with falsehood to refute the truth therewith. And they have taken my verses and what they have been warned of as a quip. 57 And who is more unjust than he who has been reminded of his lord’s verses but has turned away from them and has forgotten what his hands have offered? We have put coverings over their hearts lest they comprehend it and in their ears is deafness. And if you call them to the guidance they will never then be guided. 58 And your lord is the forgiver, the possessor of mercy. Were he to take them for what they have earned he would have hastened the torture for them. Rather, theirs is an appointment. They will not find a shelter instead of it. 59 And those villages that we had destroyed when they had done wrong and we had made an appointment for their destruction. 60 And when Musa said to his slave boy: I shall not abandon until I reach the junction of the two seas or pass for a huqub. 61 But when they had reached a junction between them they had forgotten their whale and it had taken its way into the sea as a burrow. 62 Then when they had crossed he said to his slave boy: Bring us our lunch. We have met exhaustion from this journey of ours. 63 He said: Did you see when we retired to the rock? Then I forgot the whale. And nothing made me forget it but the Devil, to mention it. And it took its way into the sea wondrously. 64 He said: That is what we were seeking. So they returned on their tracks, as a narrative. 65 Then they found a slave of our slaves whom we had given mercy from us and had taught knowledge from us. 66 Musa said to him: Can I follow you that you may teach me of what you were taught as being well guided? 67 He said: You will not be able to have patience with me. 68 And how will you be patient about what you have not encompassed of in information? 69 He said: You will find me, if Allah wills, patient and I shall not disobey your command. 70 He said: So if you follow me, do not ask me about anything until I produce for you a recollection of it. 71 So they set out until when they embarked in the ship he pierced it. He said: Have you pierced it to drown its occupants? You have come up with an idiotic thing. 72 He said: Did I not say: You will not be able to have patience with me? 73 He said: Do not censure me for what I forgot nor cause me anxiety on account of my affair in difficulty. 74 Then they set out until when they met a boy; then he killed him. He said: Have you killed a pure soul for other than a soul? You have done an abominable thing. 75 He said: Did I not tell you you would not be able to have patience with me? 76 He said: If I ask you about anything after it, do not have me as a companion. You have reached an excuse from me. 77 So they set out until when they came to the people of a village they asked its people for food but they refused to offer them hospitality. Then they found therein a wall that wants to collapse so he raised it. He said: Had you willed you would have taken a wage for it. 78 He said: This is a parting between me and you. I shall inform you of an interpretation of what you were not able to have patience for. 79 As for the ship, it was poor people’s, working in the sea. So I wanted to render it defective and there was a king behind them taking every ship by force. 80 And as for the boy his parents were believers and we feared that he would weary them with oppression and kufr. 81 So we wanted their lord to change for them one better than he in zakah and closer in compassion. 82 And as for the wall, it belonged to two orphan boys in the city and a treasure for them was under it and their father was righteous. So your lord wanted them to reach their maturity and to take their treasure out as a mercy from your lord. And I did not do it on my command. That is an interpretation of what you were not able to have patience for. 83 And they ask you about Dhul Qarnayn. Say: I shall read to you a dhikr of him. 84 We enabled him in the land and gave him a reason from everything. 85 So he followed a cable 86 Until when he reached the setting place of the sun he found it setting in a muddy spring and found by it a people. We said: Dhul Qarnayn, either you torture or you take them with goodness. 87 He said: As for him who wrongs, we shall torture him. Then he is returned to his lord and he tortures him abominably. 88 But as for him who has believed and has done a righteous deed, then his is the good recompense. And we shall speak to him from our command with ease. 89 Then he followed a cable 90 Until when he reached the rising place of the sun he found it rising on a people whom we had not made a shelter against it for. 91 Thus. And we surrounded in information of what was with him. 92 Then he followed a cable 93 Until when he reached between the two bars he found a people instead of them not almost comprehending speech. 94 They said: Dhul Qarnayn, Ya’juj and Ma’juj are corrupting in the land. So do we make an expenditure for you that you may make a bar between us and them? 95 He said: What my lord has enabled me in is better but help me with strength, I shall make between you and them a barrier. 96 Give me ingots of iron, until when he had equalised between the two tops he said: Blow, until when he had made it fire, he said: Give me, I shall empty copper over it. 97 So they were not able to climb it nor able to dig into it. 98 He said: This is a mercy from my lord. But when my lord’s promise came he made it flat. And my lord’s promise was true. 99 And we left some of them on that day to surge over others and it was blown on the trumpet then we gathered them as a crowd. 100 And we displayed Jahannam on that day to the kafirun as a display. 101 Those whose eyes were in a cover from my dhikr and were not able to hear. 102 So have those who have disbelieved supposed that they would take my slaves instead of me as protectors? We have prepared Jahannam for the kafirun as lodging. 103 Say: Shall we inform you of the most losing in deed? 104 Those whose striving has strayed in the dunya life while they think that they do well in manufacture. 105 Those are the ones who have disbelieved in their lord’s verses and his meeting. So their deeds have become worthless so we do not establish for them on the day of resurrection a weight. 106 That is their penalty, Jahannam, because they have disbelieved and have taken my verses and my messengers as a quip. 107 Those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds, they had the jannat of paradise as lodging, 108 Abiding therein indefinitely. They do not seek transfer from them. 109 Say: If the sea were ink for my lord’s words, the sea would be exhausted before my lord’s words were exhausted, even if we brought the like of it as aid. 110 Say: I am only a human being the like of you. He inspires me that your god is one god. So he who was hoping for the meeting of his lord, let him do a righteous deed and not associate anyone with the worship of his lord.
