1 Alif lam mim. 2 That Book--there is no doubt therein, guidance for the fearers, 3 Those who believe in the ghayb and establish salat and from what we have provided them they spend. 4 And those who believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you and in the hereafter are they certain. 5 Those are on guidance from their lord and those--they are the successful. 6 Those who have disbelieved, it is alikeness for them whether you have warned them or have not warned them--they do not believe. 7 Allah has sealed their hearts and on their hearing and on their vision is a film. And theirs is great torture. 8 And of the people are those who say: We have believed in Allah and in the last day, but they are not believers. 9 They seek to trick Allah and those who have believed but they trick not but themselves and they do not perceive. 10 In their hearts is disease so Allah has increased them in disease and theirs is painful torture because they used to lie. 11 And when it was said to them: Do not spread corruption on Earth, they said: We are only reformers. 12 Indeed, they are the corrupters but they do not perceive. 13 And when it was said to them: Believe as people believed, they said: Are we to believe as the fools believed? Indeed, they are the fools but do not know. 14 And when they met those who believed they said: We have believed, but when they passed away to their devils they said: We are with you, we are only mockers. 15 Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their tyranny, roving. 16 Those are the ones who have bought delusion for guidance. So their trade has not profited nor were they guided. 17 Their likeness is as the likeness of the one who has kindled a fire then when what was around him illuminated Allah took their light and left them in darknesses, not seeing. 18 Deaf, dumb, blind so they do not return. 19 Or as a rainstorm from the sky wherein are darknesses and thunder and lightning. They put their fingers in their ears on account of the thunderbolts in apprehension of death. And Allah encompasses the kafirun. 20 The lightning almost makes off with their vision. Whenever it flashed for them they walked in it and when it went dark upon them they stood. And had Allah willed he would have taken their hearing and their vision. Allah is mighty over everything. 21 People, worship your lord, the one who created you and those before you; perhaps you will fear. 22 The one who made the Earth a bed for you and the sky a building and sent down water from the sky and brought out therewith a provision from the fruits for you. So do not make peers for Lah when you know. 23 And if you are in doubt about what we have sent down upon our slave then bring a surah of the like of it and invoke your witnesses instead of Allah if you are truthful. 24 And if you have not done so, and you will not do so, then fear the fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the kafirun. 25 And give good news to those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds that theirs are jannat, rivers running beneath them. Every time they have been provided with therefrom from fruit as a provision they have said: This is the one we were provided with before. And they have been given similar to it. And theirs therein are purified husbands and they abide therein indefinitely. 26 Allah is not ashamed to make a similitude of even a mosquito and even above it. So as for those who have believed, and they know that it is the truth from their lord, and as for those who have disbelieved, and they say: What did Allah want by this similitude? He misguides therewith many and guides therewith many. And he does not misguide therewith except the fasiqun. 27 Those who break the covenant of Allah after its agreement and they cut what Allah has commanded to be joined and corrupt on the Earth. Those are the losers. 28 How do you disbelieve in Allah when you were dead then he vivified you then he causes you to die then he vivifies you then to him you are returned? 29 He is the one who created for you all what is on the Earth then ascended to the sky and regularised them as seven skies. And he is learned in everything. 30 And when your lord said to the angels: I am making a successor on Earth, they said: Are you making thereon one who corrupts thereon and sheds bloods when we praise with your praise and sanctify for you? He said: I know what you do not know. 31 And he taught Adam all their names. Then he displayed them to the angels and said: Inform me of the names of these, if you are truthful. 32 They said: Praise be to you! We have no knowledge except what you have taught us. You, you are the learned, the wise. 33 He said: Adam, inform them of their names. Then when he had informed them of their names he said: Did I not tell you I know the ghayb of the skies and the Earth and what you reveal and what you were concealing? 34 And when we said to the angels: Do sujud to Adam, they did sujud except Iblis. He refused and was arrogant and was of the kafirun. 35 And we said: Adam, dwell, you and your husband, in the Jannah and eat of it carefree where you have willed. But do not approach this tree so you be of the wrongdoers. 36 Then the Devil tripped them from it and expelled them from what they were in. And we said: Get down, an enemy to one another. And you have a lodging and goods on the Earth for a time. 37 Then Adam received words from his lord. So he repented for him. He is the repenter, the merciful. 38 We said: Get down from it all of you! And when guidance comes to you from me then those who have followed my guidance, there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve. 39 And those who have disbelieved and have called our verses a lie, those are the companions of the fire. They abide therein indefinitely. 40 Banu Isra’il, remember my grace which I bestowed upon you and fulfill my covenant. I fulfill your covenant and me then be you afraid of. 41 And believe in what I have sent down confirming what is with you and do not be the first kafir of it. And do not buy my verses at a low price and me then you fear. 42 And do not intermingle the truth with falsehood and conceal the truth when you know. 43 And establish salat and give the zakat and bow with the bowers. 44 Do you command people righteousness and forget yourselves when you read the Book? So do you not comprehend? 45 And ask for help with patience and salat and it is an enormity except upon the humble. 46 Those who think that they are meeting their lord and that they are returning to him. 47 Banu Isra’il, remember my grace that I bestowed upon you and that I preferred you to the ‘alamin. 48 And fear a day a soul does not recompense for a soul at all nor is intercession accepted from it nor is a ransom taken from it nor are they helped. 49 And when we saved you from Fir’awn’s family afflicting you with the evil of torture, slaughtering your sons and letting your women live. And in that there is a great affliction from your lord. 50 And when we parted the sea for you we saved you and drowned Fir’awn’s family while you look. 51 And when we promised Musa 40 nights. Then you took the calf after him while you are wrongdoers. 52 Then we pardoned you after that; perhaps you will thank. 53 And when we gave Musa the Book and the Furqan; perhaps you will be guided. 54 And when Musa said to his people: People, you have wronged yourselves in your taking the calf. So repent to your bari’ and kill yourselves. That is better for you with your bari’. Then he repented for you. He is the repenter, the merciful. 55 And when you said: Musa, we shall not believe in you until we see Allah publicly. So the thunderbolt took you while you look. 56 Then we raised you after your death; perhaps you will thank. 57 And we shaded the clouds over you and we sent down the manna and the quail upon you. Eat of good things what we have provided you. And they did not wrong us but they were wronging themselves. 58 And when we said: Enter this village then eat from it where you have willed pleasantly and enter the gate doing sujud. And say: Alleviation. We forgive you your sins and shall increase the good-doers. 59 But those who wronged changed speech other than that which was said to them. So we sent down upon those who wronged rijz from the sky because they were acting immorally. 60 And when Musa asked for a drink for his people we said: Strike the stone with your staff. Then 12 springs poured forth from it. All people knew their drinking place. Eat and drink from Allah’s provision and do not act wickedly in the land corrupting. 61 And when you said: Musa, we shall not be patient with one food so invoke your lord for us to bring out for us of what the Earth grows, of its green plants and its cucumbers and its fum and its lentils and its onions. He said: Would you replace that which is lower with that which is better? Go down to Egypt. Then you will have what you have asked for. And humiliation and destitution were struck upon them and they returned with anger from Allah. That is because they used to disbelieve in the signs of Allah and kill the prophets without right. That is because they disobeyed and were transgressing. 62 Those who have believed and those who were Jewish and the Nasara and the Sabians--those who have believed in Allah and the last day and have done a righteous deed, theirs is their wage with their lord and there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve. 63 And when we took your covenant and raised above you the tur: Take what we have given you with strength and remember what is in it; perhaps you will fear. 64 Then you turned away after that. So had it not been for the favour of Allah upon you and his mercy you would have been of the losers. 65 And you knew those of you who transgressed concerning the Sabbath. And we said to them: Be vile apes. 66 So we made it an exemplary punishment for what is in front of them and what is behind them and an exhortation to the fearing. 67 And when Musa said to his people: Allah commands you to slaughter a cow. They said: Do you take us as a quip? He said: I take refuge in Allah that I be of the ignorant. 68 They said: Invoke your lord for us to make clear to us what it is. He said: He says: It is a cow, not old or a heifer, middle-aged between that. So do what you are commanded. 69 They said: Invoke your lord for us to make clear to us what its colour is. He said: He says: It is a cow, bright yellow is its colour. Easing to the beholders. 70 They said: Invoke your lord for us to make clear to us what it is. Cows look alike to us. And we, if Allah wills, are guided. 71 He said: He says: It is a cow, not acquiescent ploughing the land nor watering the tilth, sound, no spot in it. They said: Now you have come with the truth. So they slaughtered it and they almost did not. 72 And when you killed a soul then you disputed concerning it and Allah brings out what you were concealing. 73 So we said: Hit him with some of it. Thus does Allah vivify the dead and he shows you his signs; perhaps you will comprehend. 74 Then your hearts were hard after that and they were like stones or more severe in hardness. And from the stones what rivers gush out of. And of them what crack so water comes out of it and of them what goes down from fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware of what you do. 75 Do you then hope that they will believe in you while a party of them used to hear Allah’s words then distort it after what they had comprehended it while they knew? 76 And when those who believed met they said: We have believed. And when they turned to one another they said: Do you tell them of what Allah has opened upon you that they may argue with you therewith before your lord? So do you not comprehend? 77 Do they not know that Allah knows what they conceal and what they reveal? 78 And of them are ummiyun not knowing the book but desires and they but think. 79 So woe to those who write the book with their hands then say: This is from Allah, to buy therewith at a low price. So woe to them for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn. 80 And they have said: The fire will not touch us except for counted days. Say: Have you taken a covenant with Allah and Allah will not violate his covenant? Or do you say against Allah what you do not know? 81 Yes, he who has earned an evil deed and his sin has surrounded him, those are the companions of the fire; they abide therein indefinitely. 82 And those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds, those are the companions of the Jannah; they abide therein indefinitely. 83 And when we took the covenant of the Banu Isra’il: You do not worship but Allah and self-restraint towards parents and relatives and orphans and paupers and say good to people and establish salat and give the zakat. Then you turned away, except a few of you, when you were exposing. 84 And when we took your covenant: You do not shed your bloods nor expel yourselves from your homes. Then you ratified when you were witnessing. 85 Then you, those, kill yourselves and expel a party of you from their homes, supporting one another against them in iniquity and oppression. And if they come to you as prisoners you ransom them while it, their expulsion, is forbidden to you. So do you believe in some of the book and disbelieve in some? Then what is a recompense of one who does that among you but disgrace in the dunya life and on the day of resurrection they are returned to the severest torture? And Allah is not unaware of what you do. 86 Those are the ones who have bought the dunya life for the hereafter, so the torture is not lightened from them nor are they helped. 87 And we gave Musa the Book and sent the messengers after him. And we gave Isa son of Maryam the proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. So has every time a messenger come to you with what your souls do not desire you have been arrogant? So a party you accused of lying and a party you kill. 88 And they have said: Our hearts are a wrap. Nay, Allah has cursed them for their kufr, so little is what they believe. 89 And when a book came to them from Allah confirming what is with them, and they used to ask before for victory over those who disbelieved, so when what they knew came to them, they disbelieved in it. So Allah’s curse is on the kafirun. 90 Miserable was what they bought themselves with, to disbelieve in what Allah sent down, in oppression that Allah sends down from his favour upon whom he wills of his slaves. So they have come back with anger upon anger. And the kafirun have base torture. 91 And when it was said to them: Believe in what Allah has sent down, they said: We believe in what was sent down upon us. And they disbelieve in what is behind it, and it is the truth confirming what is with them. Say: So why do you kill Allah’s prophets before, if you are believers? 92 And Musa came to you with the proofs then you took the calf after him while you are wrongdoers. 93 And when we took your covenant and raised the tur over you. Take what we have given you with power and hear. They said: We have heard and disobeyed. And they were caused to drink the calf in their hearts for their kufr. Say: Miserable was what your faith commands you with, if you are believers. 94 Say: If you have the hereafter home with Allah exclusively instead of people then wish for death if you are truthful. 95 And they will never wish for it for what their hands have offered. And Allah is learned in the wrongdoers. 96 And you will find them the greediest of people for life and than those who have associated. One of them desires to have his life prolonged for 1,000 years. And it is not going to nudge him from the torture to have his life prolonged. And Allah is a seer of what they do. 97 Say: He who was an enemy to Jibril, he sent it down upon your heart with Allah’s permission, confirming what is in front of it and as guidance and good news for the believers. 98 He who was an enemy to Lah and his angels and his messengers and Jibril and Mikal, Allah is an enemy to the kafirun. 99 And we sent down to you clear verses and none disbelieves in them but the fasiqun. 100 And is it whenever they have covenanted a covenant a party of them has chucked it? Rather, most of them do not believe. 101 And when a messenger came to them from Allah confirming what is with them, a party of those who were given the Book chucked Allah’s book behind their backs as though they do not know. 102 And they followed what the devils read over the dominion of Sulayman. And Sulayman did not disbelieve but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. And they do not teach anyone until they say: We are only fitnah, so do not disbelieve. But they learn from them what separates therewith man from his husband. And they do not harm therewith anyone but with Allah’s permission. And they learn what harms them and it does not profit them. And they knew whoever buys it, has no share in the hereafter. And miserable is what they sold themselves therewith, had they known. 103 And had they believed and feared, a reward from Allah would have been better, had they known. 104 Those who have believed, do not say: Ra’ina and say: Unzurna and hear. And the kafirun have painful torture. 105 Those who have disbelieved of the People of the Book do not like, nor the mushrikun, that any good should be sent down upon you from your lord. And Allah favours with his mercy whom he wills. And Allah is the possessor of the great favour. 106 What we abrogate from a verse or cause it to be forgotten we bring better than it or the like of it. Have you not known that Allah is mighty over everything? 107 Did you not know that Allah, his is the dominion of the skies and the Earth? And you have no protector or helper instead of Allah. 108 Or do you want to ask your messenger as Musa was asked before? And he who accepts kufr in exchange for faith has strayed from the sameness of the way. 109 Many of the People of the Book have desired bringing you back after your faith as kuffar out of envy from themselves after the truth became clear to them. So pardon and overlook until Allah comes with his command. Allah is mighty over everything. 110 And perform the salat and give the zakat. And what you offer for yourselves of good you find it with Allah. Allah is a seer of what you do. 111 And they said: None will enter the Jannah but those who were Jewish or Nasara. Those are their desires. Say: Bring your proof if you are truthful. 112 Yes, he who has surrendered his face to Lah and he is a good-doer, his is his wage with his lord. And there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve. 113 And the Jews have said: The Nasara are on nothing. And the Nasara have said: The Jews are on nothing. And they read the Book. Thus those who do not know have said, the like of their speech. So Allah judges between them on the day of resurrection concerning what they used to differ in. 114 And who is more unjust than he who has prevented the mosques of Allah, his name to be mentioned in them and has striven for their ruin? Those, theirs was not to enter them except terrified. Theirs in the dunya is disgrace and theirs in the hereafter is great torture. 115 Lah’s is the rising place and the setting place, so wherever you turn there is the face of Allah. Allah is wide, learned. 116 And they have said: Allah has taken a child. Praise be to him! Rather, his is what is in the skies and the Earth. All are obedient to him. 117 The originator of the skies and the Earth. And when he has preordained a matter he only says to it: Be, and it is. 118 And those who do not know have said: Why does Allah not speak to us or a sign come to us? Thus did those before them say the like of their speech. Their hearts have resembled one another’s. We have made the signs clear for people who are certain. 119 We sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and as a nadhir. And you are not asked about the companions of the jahim. 120 And the Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Nasara, until you follow their cult. Say: Allah’s guidance, it is the guidance. And if you have followed their desires after that which has come to you of the knowledge, you have no protector or helper from Allah. 121 Those we gave the Book to read it with its right chanting. Those believe in it. And he who disbelieves in it, those are the losers. 122 Banu Isra’il, remember my grace that I bestowed upon you and that I preferred you to the ‘alamin. 123 And fear a day a soul does not recompense for a soul at all nor is a ransom accepted from it nor does intercession benefit it nor are they helped. 124 And when his lord tested Ibrahim with words and he fulfilled them he said: I am making you a leader for people. He said: And of my offspring? He said: My covenant does not reach the wrongdoers. 125 And when we made the House a resort for people and security. And take from the station of Ibrahim a musalla. And we covenanted to Ibrahim and Isma’il: Purify my house for the circumambulators and those devoted and those who bow, those doing sujud. 126 And when Ibrahim said: Lord, make this a secure country and provide its people with fruits, him who has believed of them in Allah and the last day. He said: And he who has disbelieved, I shall amuse him a little then force him to the torture of the fire. And miserable was the destiny. 127 And when Ibrahim raises the foundations of the House, and Isma’il. Our lord, accept from us. You are the hearer, the learned. 128 Our lord, and make us Muslims for you. And from our offspring a surrendering nation for you. And show us our rituals and repent for us. You are the repenter, the merciful. 129 Our lord, and raise among them a messenger from them reading your verses to them and teaching them the book and the wisdom and purifying them. You are the mighty, the wise. 130 And who has an aversion from Ibrahim’s cult but he who has stultified himself? And we chose him in the dunya and he in the hereafter is of the righteous. 131 When his lord said to him: Surrender!, he said: I have surrendered to the lord of the ‘alamin. 132 And Ibrahim imposed it upon his sons, and Ya’qub: My sons, Allah has chosen the religion for you so do not die except when you are Muslims. 133 Or were you witnesses when death attended Ya’qub, when he said to his sons: What will you worship after me? They said: We shall worship your god and the god of your fathers, Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq, one god. And we are Muslims to him. 134 That is a nation. What it had earned has passed away for it and yours is what you have earned. And you are not asked about what they used to do. 135 And they said: Be Jews or Nasara, to be guided. Say: No, the cult of Ibrahim, a Hanif. And he was not of the mushrikun. 136 Say: We have believed in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes and what was given to Musa and Isa and what was given to the prophets from their lord. We do not distinguish between any of them. And we are Muslims to him. 137 So if they have believed in the like of what you have believed in then they have been guided and if they have turned away then they are only in dissension. So Allah will suffice against them and he is the hearer, the learned. 138 The dyeing of Allah. And who is better than Allah at dyeing? And we are worshippers for him. 139 Say: Do you argue with us about Allah when he is our lord and your lord? And ours are our deeds and yours are your deeds and we are sincere towards him. 140 Or do you say: Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes were Jews or Nasara? Say: Are you a knower or is Allah? And who is more unjust than he who has concealed a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do. 141 That is a nation. What it had earned has passed away for it and yours is what you have earned. And you are not asked about what they used to do. 142 The fools of the people will say: What has turned them from their qiblah which they used to be on? Say: Lah’s is the rising place and the setting place. He guides whom he wills to a straight path. 143 And thus we have made you a middle nation that you may be witnesses over people and that the messenger may be a witness over you. And we have not made the qiblah which you were on except that we might know who follows the messenger from him who turns on his heels. And it was an enormity except for those whom Allah had guided. And Allah was not to waste your faith. Allah is kind, merciful to people. 144 It may be we see the turning of your face to the sky so we turn you to a qiblah that you will be pleased with. So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque and wherever you are turn your faces towards it. And those who were given the Book know that it is the truth from their lord. And Allah is not unaware of what they do. 145 Even if you had brought those who had been given the Book every sign, they would not have followed your qiblah and you are not a follower of their qiblah. And they are not a follower of each other’s qiblah. And if you followed their desires after what has come to you of knowledge, you would then be of the wrongdoers. 146 Those whom we gave the Book to recognise it as they recognise their sons. And a party of them conceals the truth when they know. 147 The truth from your lord so do not be of the doubters. 148 And for all a direction. He turns towards it, so race to the goods. Wherever you are, Allah brings you all. Allah is mighty over everything. 149 And from where you have come out turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. And it is the truth from your lord. And Allah is not unaware of what you do. 150 And from where you have gone out turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. And wherever you were, turn your faces towards it so that there is no argument for people against you except those who have wronged among them. So do not fear them and fear me. And that I may complete my grace upon you; and perhaps you will be guided. 151 As we sent among you a messenger from you reading to you our verses and purifying you and teaching you the book and the wisdom and teaching you what you did not know. 152 So remember me, I shall remember you and thank me and do not be ungrateful to me. 153 Those who have believed, ask for help with patience and salat. Allah is with the patient. 154 And do not say of him killed in the way of Allah: Dead men. Rather, alive, but you do not perceive. 155 And we will test you with something of fear and hunger and shortage of monies and souls and fruits. And give good news to the patient. 156 Those who, when calamity has struck them, have said: We are Lah’s and we are returning to him. 157 Those, for them are prayers from their lord and mercy. And those are the guided. 158 Al-Safa and Al-Marwah are of the cult rituals of Allah. So he who has performed Hajj of the House or has performed Umrah, there is no misdemeanour upon him to circumambulate them. And he who has done good voluntarily then Allah is grateful, learned. 159 Those who conceal what we have sent down of the proofs and the guidance after we made it clear to people in the book--those, Allah curses them and the cursers curse them. 160 Except those who have repented and reformed and clarified. Then those I repent for and I am the repenter, the merciful. 161 Those who have disbelieved and died while they are kuffar, those, upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and people, all. 162 Abiding therein indefinitely. The torture is not alleviated for them nor are they given respite. 163 And your god is one god. There is no god but him, Al-Rahman, Al-Rahim. 164 In the creation of the skies and the Earth and the difference of night and day and the ships which run in the sea with what benefits people and what Allah has sent down from the sky of water and has vivified the Earth therewith after its death and has spread thereon of every beast and the change of winds and the clouds subjected between the sky and the Earth are signs for people who comprehend. 165 And of people is he who takes peers instead of Allah. They love them like Allah’s love. And those who have believed are stronger in love for Lah. And if those who wronged saw when they see the torture that all power is Lah’s and that Allah is the severe in torture. 166 When those who were followed washed their hands of those who followed and saw the torture and the reasons were cut off with them. 167 And those who followed them said: Would that we had a time then we would wash our hands of them as they washed their hands of us. Thus Allah shows them their deeds as regrets for them. And they are not going to come out of the fire. 168 People, eat of what is on the Earth, halal, good. And do not follow the Devil’s steps. He is an obvious enemy to you. 169 He only commands you evil and fahsha’ and that you say about Allah what you do not know. 170 And when it was said to them: Follow what Allah has sent down, they said: Rather, we follow what we found our fathers on. Even though their fathers did not comprehend anything nor were guided? 171 And a similtude of those who have disbelieved is like the similitude of the one who caws at what does not hear except calling and shouting--deaf, dumb, blind, so they do not comprehend. 172 Those who have believed! Eat of good things what Allah has provided you with and be grateful to Lah, if you worship him. 173 He has only forbidden to you that found dead and blood and pork and what has been offered with it to other than Allah. So he who has been forced without being desirous or transgressing, there is no iniquity upon him. Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 174 Those who conceal what Allah has sent down of the book and buy therewith at a low price--those do not eat in their bellies except the fire. And Allah does not speak to them on the day of resurrection nor purify them, and theirs is painful torture. 175 Those are the ones who have bought error for guidance and torture for forgiveness. So what they were more patient on the fire. 176 That is because Allah has sent down the book in truth. And those who have differed concerning the book are in far schism. 177 It is not piety to turn your faces in the direction of the rising place and the setting place but piety is he who has believed in Allah and the last day and the angels and the book and the prophets and has given money in his love of it to the two relatives and the orphans and the needy and the traveller and those who ask and on the necks and has performed salat and given the zakat and those who fulfill their covenant when they have covenanted and the patient in suffering and adversity and at the time of horribleness. Those are the ones who have told the truth and those are the fearers. 178 Those who have believed, retribution has been written for you regarding the killed. The free man for the free man and the slave for the slave and the female for the female. But he who has been pardoned something for it by his brother then following with kindness and performance to him with doing good. That is relief from your lord and mercy. Then he who has transgressed after that has painful torture. 179 And you have in retribution life, possessors of albab; perhaps you will fear. 180 Written for you when death has attended one of you, if the will has left good for the parents and the close relatives with kindness, a right upon the fearers. 181 So he who has altered it after what he has heard, his iniquity is only on those who alter it. Allah is a hearer, learned. 182 But he who has feared from a testator a deviation or iniquity then has reformed between them, there is no iniquity upon him. Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 183 Those who have believed, fasting has been written upon you as it was written upon those before you; perhaps you will fear. 184 Counted days. So he who among you was sick or on a journey then an ‘iddah of other days. And upon those who endure it, a ransom, feeding of a needy person. So he who has done good voluntarily, it is better for him. And to fast is better for you if you know. 185 The month of Ramadan wherein the Quran was sent down, a guidance for people and proofs of the guidance and the Furqan. So he among you who has witnessed the month, let him fast on it, and he who was ill or on a journey, then an ‘iddah of other days. Allah wants ease for you and does not want hardship for you, and that you complete the ‘iddah and magnify Allah for what he has guided you; and perhaps you will thank. 186 And when my slaves ask you about me, I am near. I answer the invocation of the invoker when he calls me, so let them answer me and believe in me; perhaps they will go the right way. 187 Obscenity towards your women has been made lawful for you on the night of fasting. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. Allah knew that you used to deceive yourselves so he repented for you and pardoned you. So now have relations with them and seek what Allah has written for you. And eat and drink until the white thread is distinguished for you from the black thread of dawn. Then complete the fast to the night. And do not have relations with them when you are secluded in the mosques. Those are Allah’s hudud, so do not approach them. Thus Allah clarifies his verses for people; perhaps they will fear. 188 And do not consume your monies among yourselves falsely and present them to the judges that you may consume a party of the people’s monies iniquitously while you know. 189 They ask you about the crescents. Say: They are rendezvous times for people and the Hajj. And it is not piety to come to the houses from their backs but piety is he who has feared. And come to the houses from their doors. And fear Allah; perhaps you will succeed. 190 And fight in the way of Allah those who fight you and do not transgress. Allah does not love the transgressors. 191 And kill them where you have found them and expel them from where they have expelled you, and fitnah is severer than killing. And do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight you in it. Then if they fight you, kill them. Thus is the recompense of the kafirun. 192 Then if they cease, Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 193 And fight them until there is no fitnah and the religion is Lah’s. Then if they cease there is no oppression except against the wrongdoers. 194 The sacred month for the sacred month and the prohibitions retaliation. So he who has aggressed against you, aggress against him with an equivalent what he has aggressed against you. And fear Allah and know that Allah is with the fearers. 195 And spend in the way of Allah and do not throw with your hands to ruin. And do good. Allah loves the good-doers. 196 And complete the Hajj and the Umrah for Lah. Then if you have been prevented, what has been obtained with ease of the hadi. And do not shave your heads until the hadi reaches its spot. Then he who among you was ill or had in him a harm of his head then a ransom of fasting or charity or immolation. Then when you have felt secure, he who has enjoyed the Umrah to the Hajj, then what he has obtained with ease of the hadi. But he who has not found, then a three-day fast in the Hajj and seven when you have returned. That is ten whole. That is for him who does not have his family present at the Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah and know that Allah is the severe in punishment. 197 The Hajj is known months, so he who has made obligatory therein the Hajj, there is no obscenity or dissoluteness or argument on the Hajj. And what you do of good, Allah knows it. And provide but the best aliment is taqwa. And fear me, possessors of albab. 198 There is no misdemeanour upon you to seek favour from your lord. And when you have departed from Arafat remember Allah at the Sacred Site. And remember him as he has guided you, and if you were before it, of those straying. 199 Then pour out from where people have poured out and ask Allah for forgiveness. Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 200 Then when you have completed your rituals remember Allah like your remembering your fathers or with stronger remembrance. And of the people is he who says: Our lord, give us in the dunya. And he has no share in the hereafter. 201 And of them is he who says: Our lord, give us a good in the dunya and a good in the hereafter and save us from the torture of the fire. 202 Those, theirs is a share of what they have earned and Allah is the quick in account. 203 And remember Allah in counted days. So he who has made haste in two days, there is no iniquity upon him and he who has delayed, there is no iniquity upon him for him who has feared. And fear Allah and know that you are gathered to him. 204 And of the people is he whose speech pleases you in the dunya life and Allah calls as witness on what is in his heart and he is the archenemy of the opponents. 205 And when he has turned away he has striven in the land to corrupt therein and destroy tilth and progeny. And Allah does not love corruption. 206 And when it has been said to him: Fear Allah, honour has taken him with iniquity. So his sufficiency is Jahannam and miserable was the bed. 207 And of people is he who buys himself seeking Allah’s pleasure. And Allah is kind to the slaves. 208 Those who have believed, enter in peace altogether and do not follow the Devil’s steps. He is an obvious enemy to you. 209 Then if you slip after what the proofs have come to you then know that Allah is mighty, wise. 210 Are they waiting except for Allah to come to them in shadows of the clouds, and the angels, and the matter was preordained? And to Allah the matters return. 211 Ask the Banu Isra’il how many we gave them of a clear sign. And he who changes Allah’s grace after what has come to him then Allah is the severe in punishment. 212 The dunya life has been adorned for those who have disbelieved and they mock those who have believed. And those who have feared above them on the day of resurrection. And Allah provides whom he wills without account. 213 People were one nation then Allah raised the prophets as bearers of good news and as warners and sent down with them the book in truth to judge between people in what they had differed concerning. And none differed in it except those who had been given it after the proofs had come to them out of wrong between them. And Allah guided those who had believed in what they had differed in of the truth with his permission. And Allah guides whom he wills to a straight path. 214 Or did you think that you would enter the Jannah while the similitude of those who passed away before you has not come to you? Suffering and adversity touched them and they were shaken until the messenger says and those who believed with him: When is Allah’s victory? Indeed, Allah’s victory is near. 215 They ask you what they spend. Say: What you have spent of good, for the parents and the relatives and the orphans and the needy and the traveller. And what you do of good. So Allah is learned in it. 216 Fighting has been written upon you while it is something hateful to you. And perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you, and perhaps you love a thing and it is evil for you. And Allah knows and you do not know. 217 They ask you about the sacred month, fighting in it. Say: Fighting in it is big and blocking from the way of Allah, and kufr in him, and the Sacred Mosque, and expulsion of its people from it, is bigger with Allah. And fitnah is bigger than killing. And they still fight you until they bring you back from your religion if they can. And he who bounces back among you from his religion then dies while he is a kafir, those--their deeds have become worthless in the dunya and the hereafter. And those are the companions of the fire, they abide indefinitely therein. 218 Those who have believed and those who have emigrated and waged jihad in the way of Allah, those hope for Allah’s mercy. And Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 219 They ask you about wine and maysir. Say: In them is a big offence and benefits for people. And their offence is bigger than their benefit. And they ask you what they spend. Say: The pardon. Thus Allah clarifies the verses for you; perhaps you will ponder. 220 Concerning the dunya and the hereafter. And they ask you about the orphans. Say: Reform for them is a good. And if you mix with them, then your brothers. And Allah knows the corrupter from the reformer. And had Allah willed he would have made you suffer. Allah is mighty, wise. 221 And do not futter the mushrikat until they believe. And a believing maid is better than a mushrikah even if she has pleased you. And do not give to the mushrikun in nikah until they believe, and a believing slave is better than a mushrik even if he has pleased you. Those call to the fire and Allah calls to the Jannah and forgiveness with his permission. And he clarifies his verses for people; perhaps they will remember. 222 And they ask you about menstruation. Say: It is harm, so withdraw from women during menstruation. And do not approach them until they purify. And when they have purified come to them from where Allah has commanded you. Allah loves the repenters and he loves the purifiers. 223 Your women are tilth for you so come to your tilth as you will and dispatch for yourselves and fear Allah and know that you are meeting him. And give good news to the believers. 224 And do not make Allah a goal for your oaths that you be pious and fear and reform between people. And Allah is a hearer, learned. 225 Allah does not censure you for nonsense in your oaths but censures you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is a forgiver, clement. 226 For those who swear off their women is a waiting of four months then if they return then Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 227 And if they decide on divorce then Allah is a hearer, learned. 228 And the divorcees wait for themselves three menstrual courses. And it is not permitted them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the last day. And their husbands are worthier of bringing them back in that if they want reconciliation. And they have the like of that which is upon them with kindness and the men a degree over them. And Allah is mighty, wise. 229 Divorce is twice. Then holding with kindness or dismissing with goodness. And it is not permitted for you to take from what you have given them at all except that they fear not to perform Allah’s hudud. But if you fear that they will not perform Allah’s hudud there is no misdemeanour upon them in what she has ransomed concerning it. Those are Allah’s hudud so do not transgress them. And he who transgresses Allah’s hudud, those are the wrongdoers. 230 Then if he divorces her she is not permissible for him afterwards until she futters a husband other than he. Then if he divorces her there is no misdemeanour upon them to return to each other if they think that they perform Allah’s hudud. And those are Allah’s hudud. He clarifies them for people who know. 231 And when you have divorced the women and they have reached their term, hold them with kindness or dismiss them with kindness. And do not hold them in harm to transgress. And he who does that has wronged himself. And do not take Allah’s verses as a quip, and remember Allah’s grace upon you and what he has sent down upon you of the book and the wisdom. He advises you therewith. And fear Allah and know that Allah is learned in everything. 232 And when you have divorced the women and they have reached their term, do not support them to futter their husbands when they have mutually consented between them with kindness. That is advised therewith he who was among you believing in Allah and the last day. That is chaster for you and purer. And Allah knows and you do not know. 233 And the mothers suckle their children two whole years, for him who wanted to complete the suckling. And upon the one born to him is their provision and their clothing with kindness. A soul is not troubled except as to its capacity. A mother is not harmed because of her child nor is one born to him because of his child. And upon the heir the like of that. Then if they want weaning by mutual consent of them two and consultation, there is no misdemeanour upon them. And if you want to ask someone to suckle your children, there is no misdemeanour upon you when you have delivered what you have given with kindness. And fear Allah and know that Allah is a seer of what you do. 234 And those who are caused to die among you and leave husbands, they lie in wait for themselves for four months and ten. Then when they have reached their term there is no misdemeanour upon you in what they have done concerning themselves with kindness. And Allah is an expert in what you do. 235 And there is no misdemeanour upon you in what you have hinted at of the engagement of women or you have concealed in yourselves. Allah has known that you will mention them but do not promise them secretly except to say kind speech. And do not decide on the nikah knot until the book reaches its term. And know that Allah knows what is in yourselves so watch out for him. And know that Allah is a forgiver, clement. 236 There is no misdemeanour upon you if you divorce the women what you have not touched or specified an obligation for them. And amuse them--upon the wealthy man according to his wealth and upon the miserly according to his wealth--property with kindness, a right upon the good-doers. 237 And if you divorce them before you touch them while you have specified an obligation for them, then half of what you have imposed except that they pardon or the one in whose hand is the nikah knot pardons. And that you pardon is closer to taqwa. And do not forget the favour between you. Allah is a seer of what you do. 238 Guard the prayers and the middle prayer and stand up for Lah obedient. 239 Then if you fear then on foot or riding. Then when you have felt secure remember Allah as he taught you what you did not know. 240 And those who are caused to die among you and leave husbands, a will for their husbands, property to the year without expulsion. But if they leave there is no misdemeanour upon you in what they have done concerning themselves from kindness. And Allah is mighty, wise. 241 And for the divorcees property with kindness--a right upon the fearers. 242 Thus Allah clarifies his verses for you; perhaps you will comprehend. 243 Have you not looked at those who left their homes while they were thousands who were watching out for death? Then Allah said to them: Die, then he vivified them. Allah is a possessor of favour for people but most people do not thank. 244 And fight in the way of Allah and know that Allah is a hearer, learned. 245 Who is the one who will lend Allah a good loan so that he multiplies it for him many multiples? And Allah grabs and spreads and to him you are returned. 246 Have you not looked at the chiefs of the Banu Isra’il after Musa, when they said to a prophet of theirs: Raise a king for us that we may fight in the way of Allah? He said: Would you perhaps, if fighting were written upon you, not fight? They said: And what is wrong with us not to fight in the way of Allah while we have been expelled from our homes and our sons? But when fighting was written upon them they turned away except a few of them. And Allah is learned in the wrongdoers. 247 And their prophet said to them: Allah has raised Talut for you as king. They said: How can he have the dominion over us while we are worthier of the dominion than he is and he has not been given capacity of money? He said: Allah has chosen him over you and increased him in capability in knowledge and body. And Allah gives his dominion to whom he wills. And Allah is wide, learned. 248 And their prophet said to them: A sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you. Therein is a Shekhinah from your lord and a remnant of what Musa’s family and Harun’s family left, the angels carrying it. In that there is a sign for you if you are believers. 249 Then when Talut left with the troops he said: Allah is testing you with a river. So he who has drunk from it is not of me and he who has not tasted it is of me except him who has scooped up a quantity with his hand. Then they drank from it except a few of them. Then when he crossed it, he and those who had believed with him, they said: We have no strength today against Jalut and his troops. Those who thought that they were meeting Allah said: How many of a small band defeated a large band with Allah’s permission? And Allah is with the patient. 250 And when they went out to Jalut and his troops they said: Our lord, empty patience upon us and make our feet firm and help us against the kafir people. 251 So they defeated them with Allah’s permission and Dawud killed Jalut and Allah gave him the dominion and the wisdom and taught him of what he wills. And had it not been for Allah’s pushing people by one another the Earth would have corrupted but Allah is a possessor of favour to the ‘alamin. 252 Those are Allah’s verses, we read them to you in truth. And you are of the commissaries. 253 Those messengers--we preferred some of them to others. Of them he whom Allah spoke to and raised some of them in degrees. And we gave Isa son of Maryam the proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. And had Allah willed, those after them would not have fought one another, after what the proofs had come to them. But they differed, so of them is he who believed and of them he who disbelieved. And had Allah willed they would not have fought one another, but Allah does what he wants. 254 Those who have believed, spend from what we have provided you before a day comes wherein there is no selling or amity or intercession. And the kafirun are the wrongdoers. 255 Allah--there is no god but him, the living, the qayyum. Neither slumber nor sleep takes him. His is what is in the skies and what is on the Earth. Who is the one who intercedes with him but with his permission? He knows what is in front of them and what is behind them. And they do not surround anything of his knowledge but what he has willed. His chair was wide over the skies and the Earth. And his guarding them does not tire him. And he is the high, the great. 256 There is no compulsion in religion. Rectitude has become clear from allurement. So he who disbelieves in the taghut and believes in Allah has grabbed the firm noose, it has no breaking. And Allah is a hearer, learned. 257 Allah is the protector of those who have believed. He brings them out of the darknesses into the light. And those who have disbelieved, their protectors are the taghut. They bring them out of the light into the darknesses. Those are the companions of the fire, they abide therein indefinitely. 258 Have you not seen the one who argued with Ibrahim concerning his lord because Allah had given him the dominion? When Ibrahim said: My lord is the one who vivifies and puts to death. He said: I vivify and put to death. Ibrahim said: Then Allah brings the sun from the rising place so bring it from the setting place. So the one who had disbelieved was dumbstruck and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people. 259 Or like the one who passed by a village and it was collapsed on its turrets. He said: How will Allah vivify this after its death? Then Allah made him die 100 years then raised him. He said: How long have you remained? He said: I have remained a day or some of a day. He said: Rather you have remained 100 years. Then look at your food and your drink, it has not spoiled, and look at your donkey, and that we may make you a sign to people. And look at the bones, how we resurrect them, then we cover them with flesh. Then when it became clear to him he said: I know that Allah is mighty over everything. 260 And when Ibrahim said: Lord, show me how you vivify the dead. He said: Have you not believed? He said: Yes but that my heart may be confident. He said: Then take four of the bird and incline them towards you then put on every mountain a portion of them then call them; they will come to you striving. And know that Allah is mighty, wise. 261 The similitude of those who spend their monies in the way of Allah is like a similitude of a grain that has grown seven ears, in each ear 100 grains. And Allah doubles for him whom he wills. And Allah is wide, learned. 262 Those who spend their monies in the way of Allah then do not follow what they have spent with largess or harm, theirs--their wage is with their lord and there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve. 263 Kind speech and forgiveness are better than charity that one follows with harm. And Allah is rich, clement. 264 Those who have believed, do not nullify your alms with largess and harm like the one who spends his money to be seen by people and does not believe in Allah and the last day. Then his similitude is like a rock upon which is dirt then a downpour has struck it and left it hard. They have no power over anything of what they have earned. And Allah does not guide the kafir people. 265 And the similitude of those who spend their monies seeking Allah’s pleasure and corroboration from themselves is like a similitude of a jannah on a rabwah; a downpour has struck it so it has given its food two doubles. Then if a downpour does not strike it then dew. And Allah is a seer of what you do. 266 Would any of you like to have a jannah of palm trees and grapes, rivers running beneath it, having therein of all fruits, and old age has struck him and he has offspring that are weak then a storm in which is fire has struck it then was on fire? Thus Allah clarifies the verses for you; perhaps you will ponder. 267 Those who have believed, spend from good things what you have earned and from what we have brought out for you from the land. And do not aim at the bad of it, spending, and you are not going to take it except disregarding it, and know that Allah is rich, praiseworthy. 268 The Devil promises you poverty and commands you fahsha’ and Allah promises you forgiveness from him and favour. And Allah is wide, learned. 269 He gives wisdom to whom he wills and he who is given wisdom has been given much good. And none remembers except the possessors of albab. 270 And what you have spent from expense or have vowed of a vow Allah knows it and the wrongdoers have no helpers. 271 If you reveal the charities then it was excellent. And if you conceal them and give them to the poor then it is better for you. And he atones for you of your evil deeds. And Allah is an expert in what you do. 272 Their guidance is not upon you but Allah guides whom he wills. And what you spend of good, it is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking Allah’s face. And what you spend of good is paid to you in full and you are not wronged. 273 For the poor who have been restricted in the way of Allah, not able to move in the land. The ignoramus thinks them rich from self-restraint, you recognise them by their mark. They do not ask people with importunity. And what you spend of good, Allah is learned in it. 274 Those who spend their monies by night and day secretly and publicly so theirs--their wage is with their lord and there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve. 275 Those who consume interest do not stand up except as the one whom the Devil fumbles with with touch stands up. That is because they have said: Selling is only the like of interest. And Allah has permitted selling and forbidden interest. So he whom admonition from his lord has come to and he has ceased, his is what has passed and his affair is to Allah and he who has returned, those are the companions of the fire, they abide therein indefinitely. 276 Allah annihilates interest and increases the charities. And Allah does not love every immoral ingrate. 277 Those who have believed and done the righteous deeds and performed salat and given the zakat, theirs--their wage is with their lord and no fear is upon them nor do they grieve. 278 Those who have believed, fear Allah and leave what has remained of interest if you are believers. 279 But if you have not done then be apprised of war from Allah and his messenger. And if you repent you have heads of your money. You do not wrong and are not wronged. 280 And if there is a poverty-stricken person then postponement to a time of lease. And to give alms is better for you if you know. 281 And fear a day whereon you are returned to Allah. Then every soul is paid in full for what it has earned and they are not wronged. 282 Those who have believed, when you have mutually contracted for a debt to a fixed term, write it. And let a scribe write between you with equity. And let a scribe not refuse to write as Allah has taught him. So let him write and let the one upon whom is the right dictate and let him fear Allah his lord and let him not diminish anything from it. Then if the one one upon whom is the right was a fool or weak or not able to dictate, he, then let his protector dictate with equity. And call two witnesses of your men. And if there are not two men then a man and two women of whom you are pleased of the witnesses, that one of them two strays then one of them two will remind the other. And let the witnesses not refuse when what they have been called. And do not tire to write it, small or big, to its term. That is more equitable with Allah and more upright for the testimony and nearer that you do not doubt except that there be a present trade that you run among you then there is not a misdemeanour upon you not to write it. And call to witness when you have concluded a deal. And let a scribe not be harmed nor a witness. And if you do then it is dissoluteness in you, and fear Allah. And Allah teaches you. And Allah is learned in everything. 283 And if you are on a journey and do not find a scribe then a held stake. Then if you feel safe from one another then let the one who has been entrusted discharge his trust. And let him fear Allah his lord. And do not conceal the testimony. And he who conceals it, guilty is his heart. And Allah is learned in what you do. 284 Lah’s is what is in the skies and what is on the Earth. And if you reveal what is in yourselves or conceal it, Allah calls you to account for it. Then he forgives whom he wills and tortures whom he wills. And Allah is mighty over everything. 285 The messenger has believed in what has been sent down to him from his lord and the believers. All have believed in Allah and his angels and his books and his messengers. We do not distinguish between any of his messengers. And they have said: We have heard and obeyed. Your forgiveness, our lord, and to you is the destiny. 286 Allah does not trouble a soul except as to its capacity, it has what it has earned and against it what it has gained. Our lord, do not censure us if we have forgotten or sinned. Our lord, and do not impose upon us a burden as you imposed upon those before us. Our lord, and do not burden us with what we have no strength for. And pardon us and forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our mawla so help us against the kafir people.
