1 A surah. We have sent it down and we have made it obligatory and we have sent down therein clear verses; perhaps you will remember. 2 The fornicatress and the fornicator, flog each one of them 100 lashes. And let not pity for them hold you back concerning Allah’s religion, if you believe in Allah and the last day. And let a group of believers witness their torture. 3 The fornicator does not futter but a fornicatress or a mushrikah, and the fornicatress--none but a fornicator or a mushrik futters her. And that has been forbidden to the believers. 4 And those who accuse muhsanat then have not brought four witnesses, flog them with 80 lashes and do not accept their testimony ever. And those--they are the fasiqun. 5 Except those who have repented after that and reformed. So Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 6 And those who accuse their husbands but did not have witnesses except themselves, the testimony of each of them is four testimonies by Allah. He is of the truthful. 7 And the fifth that Allah’s curse may be upon him if he were of the liars. 8 And it averts torture from her that she testifies four testimonies by Allah that he is of the liars. 9 And the fifth that Allah’s anger may be upon her if he were of the truthful. 10 And had it not been for Allah’s favour upon you and his mercy--and that Allah is a repenter, wise. 11 Those who came with the untruth are a group among you. Do not think it evil for you. Rather, it is good for you. For every person among them is what he has earned of iniquity and the one who has been appointed a greater share of it among them, his is great torture. 12 Why did, when you heard it, the believing men and the believing women not think good of themselves and say: This is an obvious untruth? 13 Why did they not bring four witnesses for it? Then when they did not bring the witnesses then those before Allah, they are the liars. 14 And had it not been for Allah’s favour upon you and his mercy in the dunya and the hereafter, great torture would have touched you in what you had entered into. 15 When you receive it with your tongues and say with your mouths what you have no knowledge of and think it trifling and it is great with Allah. 16 And why, when you heard it, did you not say: It is not for us to talk of this. Praise be to you, this is great defamation? 17 Allah advises you to return to the like of it ever if you are believers. 18 And Allah clarifies the verses for you. And Allah is learned, wise. 19 Those who love to spread fahishah among those who have believed, theirs is painful torture in the dunya and the hereafter. And Allah knows and you do not know. 20 And had it not been for Allah’s favour upon you and his mercy... And that Allah is kind, merciful. 21 Those who have believed, do not follow the Devil’s steps, and he who follows the Devil’s steps--he commands fahishah and baseness. And had it not been for Allah’s favour upon you and his mercy, none of you would ever have been pure, but Allah purifies whom he wills. And Allah is a hearer, learned. 22 And let the possessors of favour among you and of capacity not swear to give relatives and the needy and the emigrants in the way of Allah. And let them pardon and overlook. Do you not like that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 23 Those who accuse the muhsanat, the unaware, the believing women, have been cursed in the dunya and the hereafter. And theirs is great torture. 24 On a day their tongues and their hands and their feet bear witness against them for what they used to do. 25 On that day Allah settles their due debt for them and they know that Allah is the clear truth. 26 Malignant women are for malignant men and malignant men are for malignant women. And good women are for good men and good men are for good women. Those are exonerated from what they say. Theirs is forgiveness and a generous provision. 27 Those who have believed, do not enter houses other than your houses until you have asked permission and greeted their family. That is better for you; perhaps you will remember. 28 But if you have not found anyone therein do not enter them until permission is given you. And if it has been said to you: Return, then return. It is purer for you. And Allah is a knower of what you do. 29 It is no misdemeanour upon you to enter unoccupied houses. Therein is enjoyment for you. And Allah knows what you reveal and what you conceal. 30 Tell the believing men to lower their gaze and to guard their privates. That is purer for them. Allah is an expert in what they make. 31 And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and to guard their privates and not to display their adornment except what is visible of it. And let them draw their khumur over their bosoms and not display their adornment except to their husbands or their fathers or their husbands’ fathers or their sons or their husbands’ sons or their brothers or their brothers’ sons or their sisters’ sons or their women or what their right hands have possessed or the attendants possessing no physical desire among the men or the child who have not become manifest upon the awrat of women. And let them not strike with their feet that one may know what they conceal of their adornment. And repent to Allah together, believers; perhaps you will succeed. 32 And give the single among you and the righteous of your slaves and your maids in nikah. If they are poor, Allah enriches them from his favour. And Allah is wide, learned. 33 And let those who do not find nikah refrain until Allah enriches them from his favour. And those who seek the contract of those whom your right hands have possessed, give them the contract if you know good in them and give them from Allah’s money which he has given you. And do not compel your maids to prostitution if they want fortification, that you may seek goods of the dunya life. And he who compels them, Allah after their compulsion is a forgiver, merciful. 34 And we have sent down to you clarifying verses and a similitude of those who passed away before you and an exhortation for the fearers. 35 Allah is the light of the skies and the Earth. A similitude of his light is as a niche wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass, the glass is as though it were a brilliant planet, lit from a blessed tree, an olive tree, not eastern or western, its oil almost illuminates, even if fire had not touched it. Light upon light. Allah guides to his light whom he wills. And Allah makes similitudes for people. And Allah is learned in everything. 36 In houses Allah has given permission for his name to be raised and mentioned therein. He praises him therein in the morning errand and the late afternoons. 37 Men--trade does not distract them nor selling from Allah's dhikr and the establishing of salat and the giving of zakat. They fear a day wherein hearts and eyesight move restlessly. 38 That Allah may recompense them with the best of what they have done and increase them from his favour. And Allah provides whom he wills without account. 39 And those who have disbelieved, their deeds are like a mirage in plains. The thirsty one thinks it water until when he has come to it has not found it anything and has found Allah before him. Then he has settled his account fully. And Allah is the quick of account. 40 Or like darknesses in a deep sea. A wave above it, a wave above it covers it, a cloud, darknesses. Some of them above others. When he has taken his hand out he has barely seen it. And he whom Allah has not made light for has no light. 41 Have you not seen that Allah--he in the skies and the Earth and the bird with spread wings praises him? Each has known his salat and his tasbih. And Allah is a knower of what they do. 42 And Lah’s is the dominion of the skies and the Earth. And to Allah is the destiny. 43 Have you not seen that Allah drives clouds then unites between them then makes them a cumulus cloud then you see the rain come out from its midst? And he sends down from the sky, from mountains therein, hail and strikes therewith whom he wills and averts it from whom he wills. The flash of its lightning nearly takes away the sight. 44 Allah flips the night and the day. In that there is a lesson for those possessed of eyesight. 45 And Allah created every beast from water. Of them is he who walks on his belly and of them he who walks on two legs and of them he who walks on four. Allah creates what he wills. Allah is mighty over everything. 46 We have sent down clarifying verses. And Allah guides whom he wills to a straight path. 47 And they say: We have believed in Allah and in the messenger and we have obeyed. Then a party of them turns away after that. And those are not the believers. 48 And when they have been called to Allah and his messenger that he may judge between them, behold, a party of them are averse. 49 But if they have the truth, they come to him acquiescent. 50 Is there disease in their hearts or have they doubted or do they fear that Allah will tyrannise them, and his messenger? Rather, those are the wrongdoers. 51 The speech of the believers was only when they were called to Allah and his messenger to judge between them for them to say: We have heard and obeyed. And those, they are the successful. 52 And he who obeys Allah and his messenger and fears Allah and is fearing of him, those are the successful. 53 And they have sworn by Allah the strongest of their oaths if you commanded them they would go out. Say: Do not swear. Obedience is known. Allah is an expert in what you do. 54 Say: Obey Allah and obey the messenger but if you turn away then only what he was he has been caused to carry is upon him and what you have been caused to carry upon you. And if you obey him you will be guided. And nothing is upon the messenger but the clear notice. 55 Allah has promised those who have believed among you and have done the righteous deeds, he will make them succeed on the Earth as he made those before them succeed and enable for them their religion which he has approved for them and give them security in exchange after their fear, they worshipping me, not associating anything with me. And he who has disbelieved after that, those are the fasiqun. 56 And perform salat and give the zakat and obey the messenger; perhaps you will be shown mercy. 57 Let those who have disbelieved not think they are going to escape on the Earth. And their shelter is the fire and miserable was the destiny. 58 Those who have believed, let those whom your right hands have possessed and those who have not reached sexual maturity among you ask you for permission at three times: before the fajr prayer and when you take off your clothes at noon and after the isha’ prayer. Three awrat for you. There is no misdemeanour upon you nor upon them after them, going about among you, some of you among others. Thus Allah clarifies the verses for you. And Allah is learned, wise. 59 And when the children among you have reached sexual maturity let them ask for permission as those before them asked for permission. Thus Allah clarifies his verses for you. And Allah is learned, wise. 60 And the rank and file of the women who do not hope for nikah, there is no misdemeanour upon them to take off their clothes, not adorning with adornment. And that they abstain is better for them. And Allah is a hearer, learned. 61 There is no difficulty upon the blind man nor difficulty upon the lame nor difficulty upon the sick nor upon yourselves to eat from your houses or your fathers’ houses or your mothers’ houses or your brothers’ houses or your sisters’ houses or your paternal uncles’ houses or your paternal aunts’ houses or your maternal uncles’ houses or your maternal aunts’ houses or what you have possessed the keys of or your friend’s. There is no misdemeanour upon you to eat altogether or scattered. But when you have entered houses, greet yourselves with a greeting from Allah, blessed, good. Thus Allah clarifies the verses for you; perhaps you will comprehend. 62 The believers are only those who have believed in Allah and his messenger, and when they were with him for a general matter, they did not go until they ask for his permission. Those who ask for your permission, those are the ones who believe in Allah and his messenger. So when they have asked for your permission for some concern of theirs, give permission to whom you have willed of them and ask Allah for forgiveness for them. Allah is a forgiver, merciful. 63 Do not make the messenger’s call among you like one another’s call. Allah knows those who slip away among you to a shelter. Let those who go against his command beware lest fitnah strikes them or painful torture strikes them. 64 Indeed, Lah’s is what is in the skies and the Earth. He knows what you are on. And on a day they are returned to him then he informs them of what they did. And Allah is learned in everything.
