1 The one who wraps himself, 2 Stand up at night except a little, 3 Half of it or diminish from it a little, 4 Or add to it and recite the Quran in hymnody. 5 We shall throw heavy speech upon you. 6 Getting up in the night, it is harder in tread and more appropriate for saying. 7 Yours in the day time is long praise. 8 And mention your lord’s name and devote yourself to him. 9 The lord of the rising place and the setting place. There is no god but him, so take him as an agent. 10 And be patient over what they say and abandon them with beautiful abandoning. 11 And leave me and those who accuse of lying, the graced, and give them respite a little. 12 With us there are fetters and Jahim. 13 And food, that which chokes, and painful torture. 14 On a day the Earth and the mountains quake and the mountains were a shifting dune. 15 We have sent to you a messenger as a witness over you as we sent a messenger to Fir’awn. 16 But Fir’awn disobeyed the messenger so we took him adversely. 17 So how do you fear, if you do not believe, on a day making children hoary? 18 The sky splitting thereby, his promise was done. 19 This is an admonition, so he who has willed has taken a way to his lord. 20 Your lord knows that you stand less than two thirds of the night and half of it and a third of it and a party of those with you. And Allah determines the night and the day. He knew that you will not enumerate it so he has repented for you, so read what has got easier of the Quran. He knew that there would be sick men among you and others travelling in the land seeking Allah’s favour and others fighting in the way of Allah. So read what has got easier of it and establish salat and give the zakat and give Allah a goodly loan. And what you offer for yourselves of good you find it with Allah. It is better and greater as a wage. And ask Allah for forgiveness. Allah is a forgiver, merciful.
