The Qarin

Chronological order:

S 50:23 (34th) His qarin said: This is what is ready with me.

S 50:27 His qarin said: Our lord, I did not make him oppress but he was in far error.

S 37:51 (56th) A speaker among them said: I had a qarin.

S 43:36 (63rd) And he who turns away from Al-Rahman’s dhikr, we send him a devil and he is a qarin to him.

S 43:38 Until when he has come to us he has said: Would that there were the distance of the two rising places between me and you! And miserable was the qarin.

S 4:38 (92nd) And those who spend their monies that people may see and do not believe in Allah or the last day and he who has the Devil for a qarin, then evil was it for a qarin.

The word is used in hadith.

Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

There is none amongst you with whom is not an attache [qarin] from amongst the jinn (devil). They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, with you too? Thereupon he said: Yes, but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand and he does not command me but for good.

The Arabic says that this qarin converted to Islam.

Ibn Mas'ud reported God's messenger as saying, “There is none of you who does not have his partner [qarin] from among the jinn and his partner [qarin] from among the angels put in charge of him.” The hearers asked, “Does this also apply to you, messenger of God?” He replied, “It applies to me too, but God has helped me against him and he has accepted Islam, so he commands me to do only what is good.” Muslim transmitted it.

Jinni and angel qurana' (plural).

Narrated Jundub bin Sufyan:

Once Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) became sick and could not offer his night prayer (Tahajjud) for two or three nights. Then a lady (the wife of Abu Lahab) came and said, "O Muhammad! I think that your Satan has forsaken you, for I have not seen him [qarin] with you for two or three nights!" On that Allah revealed: 'By the fore-noon, and by the night when it darkens, your Lord (O Muhammad) has neither forsaken you, nor hated you.' (93.1-3)

So, his qarin, apparently a devil, had not been 'seen' for a few days. Then a 'revelation' comes to reassure him that his lord had not forsaken or hated him.
