The qurans speak of the Banu Isra'il and also of Jews and of those who were Jewish.

S 2:62 Those who have believed and those who were Jewish and the Nasara and the Sabians--those who have believed in Allah and the last day and have done a righteous deed, theirs is their wage with their lord and there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve.

S 2:111 And they said: None will enter the Jannah but those who were Jewish or Nasara. Those are their desires. Say: Bring your proof if you are truthful.

S 2:113 And the Jews have said: The Nasara are on nothing. And the Nasara have said: The Jews are on nothing. And they read the Book. Thus those who do not know have said, the like of their speech. So Allah judges between them on the day of resurrection concerning what they used to differ in.

S 2:120 And the Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Nasara, until you follow their cult. Say: Allah’s guidance, it is the guidance. And if you have followed their desires after that which has come to you of the knowledge, you have no protector or helper from Allah.

S 2:135 And they said: Be Jews or Nasara, to be guided. Say: No, the cult of Ibrahim, a Hanif. And he was not of the mushrikun.

S 2:140 Or do you say: Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes were Jews or Nasara? Say: Are you a knower or is Allah? And who is more unjust than he who has concealed a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.

S 3:67 Ibrahim was not a Jew nor a Nasrani but a Hanif, a Muslim, and was not of the mushrikun.

S 4:46 Of those who were Jewish, they corrupt the words from their places and say: We have heard and disobeyed and: Hear not having been heard and: Raina, distorting with their tongues and a stab into the religion. And had they said: We have heard and obeyed and: Hear and look at us, it would have been better for them and more appropriate. But Allah has cursed them for their kufr so they do not believe except a little.

S 4:160 Then for the wrongdoing of those who were Jewish we forbade for them good things that had been permitted for them and for their blocking many from the way of Allah.

S 5:18 And the Jews and the Nasara said: We are the sons of Allah and his beloved. Say: So why does he torture you for your sins? Rather, you are human among those he created. He forgives whom he wills and tortures whom he wills. And Lah’s is the dominion of the skies and the Earth and what is between them and to him is the destiny.

S 5:41 Messenger, let those who hasten in kufr not grieve you, of those who have said: We have believed with their mouths and their hearts have not believed and of those who were Jewish. Hearers of the lie, hearers of other people who have not come to you. They distort the words after their places saying: If you were given this, take it and if you were not given it, watch out. And for whom Allah wants his fitnah you will not be the master for him against Allah at all. Those are the ones whose hearts Allah has not wanted to purify. Theirs in the dunya is disgrace and theirs in the hereafter is great torture.

Allah wants its fitnah?

S 5:44 We sent down the Torah; therein is guidance and light. The prophets, those who have surrendered for those who were Jewish, judge by it, and the rabbaniyun and the rabbis what they were entrusted with of Allah’s Book and they were witnesses over it. So do not fear people but fear me. And do not buy my verses at a low price. And those who have not judged by what Allah has sent down--those are the kafirun.

S 5:51 Those who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Nasara as protectors. Some of them are protectors of others. And he who takes them as protectors among you, he is of them. Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

S 5:64 And the Jews have said: Allah’s hand is manacled. Their hands have been manacled and they have been cursed for what they have said. Rather, his hands are outstretched. He spends how he wills. And he shall increase many of them, what has been sent down to you from your lord, in despotism and kufr. And we have thrown enmity and hatred among them to the day of resurrection. Every time they have kindled a fire for war Allah has put it out. And they chase corruption in the land. And Allah does not love the corrupters.

S 5:69 Those who have believed and those who were Jewish and the Sabians and the Nasara, he who has believed in Allah and the last day and has done a righteous deed, there is no fear upon them and they do not grieve.

S 5:82 You will find the strongest of people in enmity to those who have believed the Jews and those who have associated; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to those who have believed those who have said: We are Nasara. That is because among them are priests and monks and that they are not arrogant.

S 6:146 And we forbade those who were Jewish every clawed creature and of the cows and the sheep we forbade them their fats except what their backs carried or the entrails or what is mixed with bone. That is their recompense for their outrage and we are truthful.

S 9:30 And the Jews said: Uzayr is the son of Allah and the Nasara said: The Messiah is the son of Allah. That is their speech with their mouths. They imitate the speech of those who disbelieved before. Allah fight them! How deluded they are!

S 16:118 And for those who were Jewish we forbade what we related to you before. And we did not wrong them but they would wrong themselves.

S 22:17 Those who have believed and those who were Jewish and the Sabians and the Nasara and the Magians and those who have associated, Allah judges between them on the day of resurrection. Allah is a witness over everything.

S 62:6 Say: Those who were Jewish, if you claim that you are protectors of Lah instead of the people then wish for death, if you are truthful.

'Those who were Jewish translates the word hadu, from the verb hada.

Etymology 1

Denominal verb of هُود‎ (hūd, “Jews”, collective), as if from the root ه و د‎ (h-w-d) related to returning, or from reanalysis of the noun يَهُود‎ (yahūd, “Jews, Jewry”, collective) as a third-person masculine singular verb.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /haː.da/

Verb

هَادَ (hāda) I, non-past يَهُودُ‎‎ (yahūdu)

Why do we read of the Banu Isra'il AND of the Jews? Where do the 'clear' and 'detailed' qurans identify them as being the same? It has been suggested that when quran speaks of Jews, it's speaking in reference to religion. But weren't the Israelites, if 'Jews' and 'Jewish' refer to them, supposedly Muslim? When might they have adopted a different 'cult' (see above)? If Allah named the Muslims thus (S 22:78), did it also name the Jews thus?
