S 2:78 And of them are ummiyun not knowing the book but desires and they but think.
S 3:20 And if they argue with you say: I have surrendered my face to Lah and he who has followed me. And say to those who were given the Book and the ummiyun: Have you surrendered? Then if they have surrendered then are they guided. But if they turn away then only the notice is upon you. And Allah is seer of the slaves.
S 3:75 And of the People of the Book is he who, if you feel safe from him with a qintar, he returns it to you. And among them is he who, if you feel safe from him with a dinar, he does not return it to you except what you have lasted standing over him. That is because they have said: There is not a way over us among the ummiyun. And they say a lie concerning Allah while they know.
S 7:157 Those who follow the messenger, the ummi prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Injil. He commands them kindness and forbids them baseness and declares lawful for them the good things and declares unlawful for them the bad and lays their burden from them and the shackles that were on them. So those who have believed in him and aided him and helped him and followed the light that was sent down with him, those are the successful.
S 7:158 Say: People, I am Allah’s messenger to you all, the one whose is the dominion of the skies and the Earth. There is no god but him. He vivifies and causes to die. So believe in Allah and his messenger, the ummi prophet, the one who believes in Allah and his words, and follow him; perhaps you will be guided.
S 62:2 He is the one who has raised among the ummiyun a messenger from them, reading to them his verses and purifying them and teaching them the book and the wisdom, although they were before in obvious error.
Ummi may be understood to be derived from umami 'gentile'. The ummiyun are distinguished from the People of the Book and 'those given the Book'. The ummi 'prophet' is a name that Ibn Aminah gave himself.
It has been asserted that the 'ummi prophet' of S 7:157 is a reference to Christ. I completely disagree with that. Furthermore, with the understanding that the term ummi refers to non-Christian, non-Jewish people, those who follow this 'ummi prophet' must be Muslims. And they are the ones who supposedly find him written with them in the Torah and the Injil, if we go by the text. Notice too the passages that begin with 'Say', which suggest that they are not based on some text but are more recent.
