A Short Note On S 7:157

Those who follow the messenger, the ummi prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Injil. He commands them kindness and forbids them baseness and declares lawful for them the good things and declares unlawful for them the bad and lays their burden from them and the shackles that were on them. So those who have believed in him and aided him and helped him and followed the light that was sent down with him, those are the successful.

First of all, the verse begins abruptly with 'Those who follow'. Is something missing? Who are these people who follow the ummi 'prophet'? Muslims. Where do they (allegedly) find him written? In the Torah and the Injil which are with THEM. If they are with them, and are lost or corrupted, why don't the Muslims keep them safe? As they supposedly find this ummi prophet in the Torah, how might they confirm this as they in general don't know Hebrew and don't trust translators?

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The people of the Scripture (Jews) used to recite the Torah in Hebrew and they used to explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. On that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Do not believe the people of the Scripture or disbelieve them, but say:-- "We believe in Allah and what is revealed to us." (2.136)
