In this post we shall be looking at S 56:29. And clustered talh
Al-Baghawi:
(And clustered talh) That is: bananas--its singular is talhah--from most of the mufassirun. And Al-Hasan said: It is not the banana but a tree with a cool, good shade. Al-Farra' and Abu Ubaydah said: The talh among the Arabs: large trees that have thorns. And [Mujalid] narrated from Al-Hasan ibn Sa'd. He said: A man read before Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Wa-talhin mandud", and he said: And what is wrong with the talh? It is only: clustered bunches [tal'], then he read: "Its bunches are tender". I said: Commander of the Believers, it is only in the mushaf with ha', so why not change it? And he said: The quran is not to be attacked today nor to be changed. And "al-mandub", the heaped up which has been stacked with its load from its beginning to its end; it has no prominent stalk. Masruq said: The trees of the Jannah, from their stems to their boughs, are all fruit.
The unnamed man suggests changing the spelling. He would have طلع for طلح. The present reading may or may not be a scribal misspelling.
