The number three played a big part in the founder of Islam's thinking. To begin with, we have the Bismillah, in the name of Allah, Al-Rahman, Al-Rahim.
S 2:196 And complete the Hajj and the Umrah for Lah. Then if you have been prevented, what has been obtained with ease of the hadi. And do not shave your heads until the hadi reaches its spot. Then he who among you was ill or had in him a harm of his head then a ransom of fasting or charity or immolation. Then when you have felt secure, he who has enjoyed the Umrah to the Hajj, then what he has obtained with ease of the hadi. But he who has not found, then a three-day fast in the Hajj and seven when you have returned. That is ten whole. That is for him who does not have his family present at the Sacred Mosque. And fear Allah and know that Allah is the severe in punishment.
S 2:228 And the divorcees wait for themselves three menstrual courses. And it is not permitted them to conceal what Allah has created in their wombs if they believe in Allah and the last day. And their husbands are worthier of bringing them back in that if they want reconciliation. And they have the like of that which is upon them with kindness and the men a degree over them. And Allah is mighty, wise.
S 3:41 He said: Lord, make me a sign. He said: Your sign is not to speak to people for three days except with gesture. And mention your lord much and glorify in the evening and the early morning.
S 3:124 When you say to the believers: Will it not be sufficient for you that your lord aids you with 3,000 of the angels sent down?
S 5:89 Allah does not censure you for nonsense in your oaths but censures you for what you have contracted of the oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people of an average of what you feed your family or their clothing or freeing a neck. But he who has not found then fasting for three days. That is an expiation for your oaths when you have sworn. And guard your oaths. Thus Allah clarifies his verses for you; perhaps you will thank.
S 11:65 But they hamstrung her and he said: Amuse yourselves in your home for three days. That is a promise that is not false.
S 18:25 And they remained in their cave for 300 years and they increased it by nine.
S 19:10 He said: Lord, make me a sign. He said: Your sign is not to speak to people for three nights straight.
S 24:58 Those who have believed, let those whom your right hands have possessed and those who have not reached sexual maturity among you ask you for permission at three times: before the fajr prayer and when you take off your clothes at noon and after the isha’ prayer. Three awrat for you. There is no misdemeanour upon you nor upon them after them, going about among you, some of you among others. Thus Allah clarifies the verses for you. And Allah is learned, wise.
S 39:6 He created you from one soul. Then he made from it its husband. And he sent down for you of the cattle eight pairs. He creates you in the bellies of your mothers, a creation after a creation, in three darknesses. That is Allah your lord. His is the rule. There is no god but him. So how are you turned away?
S 56:7 And you are three pairs.
S 58:7 Have you not seen that Allah knows what is in the skies and what is on the Earth? There is no confidential talk of three but he is the fourth of them nor of five but he is the sixth of them nor less than that nor more but he is with them wherever they were. Then he informs them of what they did on the day of resurrection. Allah is learned in everything.
S 65:4 And those who have despaired of menstruation of your women, if you doubt then their ‘iddah is three months and those who have not menstruated, and the pregnant, their term is until they place their burden. And he who fears Allah, he makes for him ease of his affair.
S 77:30 Rush to a shadow of three clefts,
In hadith:
Narrated Abdullah ibn Mas'ud:
The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) liked to supplicate three times and to ask pardon (of Allah) three times.
It was narrated that Abu Hayyah said:
‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) said: Shall I not show you how the Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah used to do wudoo`? We said: Yes indeed. He said: Bring me a large vessel and a small vessel of water. He washed his hands three times; took water into his nose three times and blew it out three times; and he washed his face three times; he washed his arms up to the elbows three times; he wiped his head three times; and he washed his feet three times.
It was narrated from 'Ali that:
The Messenger of Allah performed ablution and he rinsed his mouth three times, and sniffed water up into his nose three times from one handful.
Anas said that when the Prophet made a statement he repeated it three times so that it would be understood, and that when he met a company and gave them a salutation he did it three times. Bukhari transmitted it.
Ka’b bin Ujrah narrated that:
The Prophet said: “There are Mu’aqqibat, he who says them shall not be miserable. Glorify Allah at the end of every prayer thirty-three times, and praise him thirty-three times, and extol His greatness thirty-four times.”
Abu Huraira reported God’s Messenger as saying, “If anyone says ‘Glory be to God’ after every prayer thirty-three times, ‘Praise be to God’ thirty-three times, and ‘God is most great’ thirty-three times, ninety-nine times in all, and says to complete a hundred, ‘There is no god but God alone who has no partner; to Him belongs the kingdom, to Him praise is due, and He is omnipotent,’ his sins will be forgiven, even if they are as abundant as the foam of the sea.” Muslim transmitted it.
Anas reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) used to breathe three times in the course of a drink (i. e. he drank in three gulps).
Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:
"Whoever asks Allah (s.w.t) Paradise three times, Paradise says: 'O Allah, admit him into Paradise', and whoever seeks refuge from the Fire three times, the Fire says: 'O Allah, save him from the Fire.'" Other chains report similar narrations.
It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“If anyone of you sees a dream that he dislikes, let him spit dryly to his left three times and seek refuge with Allah from Satan three times, and turn over onto his other side.”
It was narrated that Jabir said:
"When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) performed Ghusl, he would pour water on his head three times."
It was narrated from Al'Irbad bin Sariyah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to send Salah on the first row three times and on the second row once.
It was narrated from ‘Irbad bin Sariyah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to ask for forgiveness for the first row three times and for the second row twice.
It was narrated that Zaid bin Thabit said:
"They were commanded to say the tasbih thirty-three times following the prayer, and to say the tahmid thirty-three times, and to say the takbir thirty-four times, then a man from among the Ansar was told in a dream: 'Did the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) command you to say the tasbih thirty-three times following the prayer, and to say the tahmid thirty-three times, and to say the takbir thirty-four times?' He said: 'Yes.' 'Instead of that, say each one twenty-five times, and include the tahlil among them.' The next morning he came to the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) and told him about that, and he said: 'Do that.'"
It was narrated from Abu Musa Al-Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“The people will be presented (before Allah) three times on the Day of Resurrection. The first two times will be for disputes and excuses, and the third time will be when the scrolls (of deeds) fly into their hands; some will take it in the right hand and some in the left.”
Then there are the 99 (3 X 33) 'names'.
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Allah has ninety-nine names, i.e. one-hundred minus one, and whoever knows them will go to Paradise." (Please see Hadith No. 419 Vol. 8)
