Maryam and Her 'Lord'

Allah speaks to various characters in the Quran but it never spoke to the founder of Islam. In this short post we shall be looking at passages in which Allah evidently speaks to Maryam.

Firstly, let's look at the passages in which the angels speak to her.

S 3:42-43 And when the angels said: Maryam, Allah has chosen you and purified you and chosen you over the women of the ‘alamin. /Maryam, be obedient to your lord and do sujud and bow with the bowers.

The angels? All of them? As the plural is used, there are at least three.

S 3:45-46 When the angels said: Maryam, Allah gives you good news of a word from him. His name is The Messiah Isa Son Of Maryam, a dignitary in the dunya and the hereafter and of the Muqarrabun. /46 And he speaks to people in the cradle and in middle age and is among the righteous.

His name is the Messiah. Pre-existent, having a compound name. Is among the righteous? So is he already among men?

S 3:47 She said: Lord, how can I have a child when a man has not touched me? He said: Thus does Allah create what he wills. When he decides a matter he only says to it: Be and it is.

Her 'lord' is evidently among them. She addresses him and he replies. As he speaks of Allah in the third person, is this 'lord' of hers Isa?

In S 19:17-21 we read: And she took from them a screen. Then we sent to her our spirit and it assumed for her the likeness of a regular man. /She said: I take refuge in Al-Rahman from you, if you are fearing. /He said: I am only a messenger of your lord’s that I may give you a pure boy. /She said: How can I have a boy when a man has not touched me and I was not a slag? /He said: Thus said your lord: It is easy for me. And that we make him a sign for people and a mercy from us. And it was a decided matter.

Allah's spirit turns up as a man and says that it is a messenger of her lord's. But above we have seen that her 'lord' was speaking to her. Does she have two lords or does she worship a multi-personal being? Now, going by a pre-Islamic work, we may see that her 'lord' who appears to her is Isa and the reader will see why Muslims think that it was Jibril that turned up and caused her to be pregnant.

14 For ye know that the angel Gabriel brought the message unto Mary. And we answered: Yea, Lord. He answered and said unto us: Remember ye not, then, that I said unto you a little while ago: I became an angel among the angels, and I became all things in all? We said unto him: Yea, Lord. Then answered he and said unto us: On that day whereon I took the form of the angel Gabriel, I appeared unto Mary and spake with her. Her heart accepted me, and she believed (She believed and laughed, Eth.), and I formed myself and entered into her body. I became flesh, for I alone was a minister unto myself in that which concerned Mary (I was mine own messenger, Eth.) in the appearance of the shape of an angel. For so must I needs (or, was I wont to) do. Thereafter did I return to my Father (Copt. After my return to the Father, and run on). The Epistula Apostolorum: Epistle of the Apostles
