What are muhsanat?

In most translations of S 4:24 the word is translated along the lines of ‘married women’.

And the muhsanat of the women except what your right hands have possessed, a book of Allah upon you. And made lawful for you is what is beyond that, that you seek with your money, being fortified, not musafihun. So what you have enjoyed of it from them, give them their wages as an obligation. And there is no transgression on you concerning what you have agreed upon after the obligation. Allah was learned, wise.

The word occurs in other verses.

S 4:25 And he among you who could not afford to futter the muhsanat, the believers, then what your right hands have possessed of your maids, the believers. And Allah knows your faith. You are of one another. So futter them with the permission of their family and give them their wages with kindness. Muhsanat, not musafihat nor takers of paramours. Then when they have been fortified and if they commit fahishah, then upon them is half of what is upon the muhsanat of torture. That is for him among you who has feared sin, and that you be patient is better for you. And Allah is a forgiver, merciful.

S 5:5 Today have the good things been permitted for you and the food of those who were given the Book is permitted for you and your food is permitted for them. And the muhsanat of the believers and the muhsanat of those who were given the Book before you when you have given them their wages, fortified, not musafihun or takers of paramours. And he who disbelieves the faith, his work has failed and he in the hereafter is of the losers.

S 24:4 And those who accuse muhsanat then have not brought four witnesses, flog them with 80 lashes and do not accept their testimony ever. And those--they are the fasiqun.

S 24:23 Those who accuse the muhsanat, the unaware, the believing women, have been cursed in the dunya and the hereafter. And theirs is great torture.

One can see the obvious problem, apart from the rape of married captives being allowed. If they are married women, is the author saying that a Muslim may take the wives of fellow Muslims and married Christian and Jewish women?
