On or Above the Throne?

'Ala can mean 'on, upon; over; above'.

S 7:54 Your lord is Allah who created the skies and the Earth in six days then ascended the throne [istawa 'ala al-'arsh]. He covers the night with the day seeking it quickly, and the sun and the moon and the stars--subjected by his command. Indeed, his is the creation and the command. Blessed be Allah, lord of the ‘alamin.

S 10:3 Your lord is the one who created the skies and the Earth in six days then ascended the throne, arranging affairs. There is no intercessor except after his permission. That is Allah your lord, so worship him. So do you not remember?

S 13:2 Allah is the one who raised the skies without columns that you see. Then he ascended the throne and subjected the sun and the moon, each running for a fixed term. He arranges the matter, he details the signs; perhaps you will be certain of the meeting of your lord.

S 20:5 Al-Rahman ascended the throne.

S 25:59 The one who created the skies and the Earth and what is between them in six days then ascended the Al-Rahman throne. So ask him, an expert.

S 32:4 Allah is the one who created the skies and the Earth and what is between them in six days. Then he ascended the throne. You have no protector or intercessor instead of him. So do you not remember?

S 57:4 He is the one who created the skies and the Earth in six days then ascended the throne. He knows what passes into the Earth and what comes out of it and what descends from the sky and what ascends into it. And he is with you wherever you were. And Allah is a seer of what you do.

In hadith we read:

Abu Huraira reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

When Allah created the creation as He was upon {fawqa} the Throne, He put down in His Book: Verily, My mercy predominates My wrath.

Fawqa means 'above; on top of; over'. We can say طارت الطائرة فوق الجبال Tarat al-ta'iratu fawqa al-jibal, The plane flew over the mountains.

Does Allah sit on the throne or does it hover over it?

In one passage Allah has a chair.

S 2:255 Allah--there is no god but him, the living, the qayyum. Neither slumber nor sleep takes him. His is what is in the skies and what is on the Earth. Who is the one who intercedes with him but with his permission? He knows what is in front of them and what is behind them. And they do not surround anything of his knowledge but what he has willed. His chair was wide over the skies and the Earth. And his guarding them does not tire him. And he is the high, the great.

Now why doesn't the author here say 'throne'? 'Throne' suggests something magnificent but 'chair' does not. Is Allah's throne actually a garden chair or a wicker chair, perhaps?
