Qurban is a word of non-Arabic origin and may be found in Hebrew. We find it in Mark 7:11
But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.
S 46:28 (66th) So why did those they took instead of Allah as a qurban, as gods, not help them? Rather, they strayed from them. And that is their falsehood and what they were fabricating.
The author in this surah seems confused as to its meaning. It would seem that he thought it meant qurb 'nearness'; 'presence'.
S 3:183 (89th) Those who said: Allah has recognised from us that we should not believe a messenger until he brings us a qurban which the fire consumes. Say: Messengers came before me with the proofs and with what you speak. So why did you kill them if you are truthful?
S 5:27 (112th) And read to them the news of the two sons of Adam in truth, when they offered a qurban and it was accepted from one of them but was not accepted from the other. He said: I will kill you. He said: Allah only accepts from the fearers.
