In this short post we shall be looking at S 33:4. Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his abdomen nor has he made your husbands whom you pronounce zihar upon your mothers. Nor has he made your adopted sons your sons. That is your speech with your mouths but Allah tells the truth. And he guides to the way.

The word translated 'abdomen' is jawf. A dictionary defines it thus:

جَوْف : - تَجْوِيف، فُتْحَة، نُقْرَة - An empty space in something solid - Small hole within a solid body - A hole in the surface of a road - A space in something that allows things to get through it - Deep track made by a wheel or wheels in soft ground - Long narrow cut or depression in the surface of hard material - Cavity of bone - aperture; furrow المختصر جَوْف : - بَطْن، خِلافُ الظَّهْر - Part of the body below the chest and diaphragm - belly; venter جَوْف : - باطِنُ البَطْن - Part of the body below the chest and diaphragm - coelom جَوْف : - داخِل، باطِن، بَطْن - Part of the body below the chest and diaphragm - inside; interior; heart; abdomen جَوَّفَ ( فعل ): - صَيَّرَهُ أَجْوَف، قَعَّرَ - make hollow جَوّفَ ( فعل ): - نَقَرَ - bore; dig; drill; hole; pierce; pit جَوّفَ ( فعل ): - قَوّرَ - cavern out; scoop out; cave; excavate; gouge جَوفَ ( فعل ): - كانَ أَجوَف - be hollow

In the Arabic Bible the word is used of the belly of the marine creature that swallowed Jonah.

Was the author actually picturing the heart in a man's belly?
