S 3:161 And it was not for a prophet to embezzle. And he who embezzles brings what he has embezzled on the day of resurrection. Then every soul is paid in full what it has earned and they are not wronged.
It was not? But it is now?
Asbab al-Nuzul for this verse:
(It is not for any prophet to embezzle (an yaghilla)…) [3:161]. Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Mutawwa'i informed us> Abu 'Amr Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Hiri> Abu Ya'la> Abu 'Abd Allah ibn 'Umar ibn Aban> Ibn al-Mubarak> Sharik> Khusayf> 'Ikrimah> Ibn 'Abbas who said: “Some red velvet acquired as booty from the idolaters at the Battle of Badr was unaccounted for, and some people said: 'Perhaps it is the Prophet, Allah, bless him and give him peace, who took it'. And so Allah, exalted is He, revealed (It is not for any prophet to embezzle (an yaghulla)). Khusayf asked Sa'id ibn Jubayr: 'Is it (It is not for any prophet to be embezzled (an yughalla))?' He answered: 'No, he can be embezzled and even killed' ”. Abu'l-Hasan Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Najjar> Abu'l-Qasim Sulayman ibn Ayyub al-Tabarani> Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Yazid al-Narsi> Abu 'Amr Hafs ibn 'Umar al-Duri> Abu Muhammad al-Yazidi> Abu 'Amr ibn al-'Ala'> Mujahid> Ibn 'Abbas who used to object against anyone who read (It is not for any prophet to be embezzled (an yughalla)) and used to say: “How could he not be embezzled when he used to be killed? Allah, exalted is He, says (… and slew the Prophets wrongfully…) [3:112]. Rather the hypocrites accused the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, of taking to himself some of the booty, and Allah, exalted is He, revealed (It is not for any prophet to embezzle (an yaghulla))”. Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Asfahani informed us> 'Abd Allah ibn Ahmad al-Asfahani> Abu Yahya al-Razi> Sahl ibn 'Uthman> Waki'> Salamah> al-Dahhak who said: “The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, sent some men in a reconnaissance patrol and he acquired some booty which he distributed on people while denying those who went in that reconnaissance patrol. When the latter came they said: 'He has distributed the booty without apportioning anything for us', as a result of which this verse was revealed (It is not for any prophet to embezzle (an yaghulla)) which was read by al-Dahhak as an yaghalla”. Said Ibn 'Abbas according to the narration of al-Dahhak: “When the Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and give him peace, got possession of the booties of Hawazin at the Battle of Hunayn, one man cheated him by holding back a needle, and so Allah, exalted is He, revealed this verse”. https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=86&tSoraNo=3&tAyahNo=161&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2
Someone cheated Allah's boss by holding back a needle? The booty was the latter's?
Who took the velvet? Why didn't Allah clear its boss' name? We are told that Musa was cleared.
S 33:69 Those who have believed, do not be like those who harmed Musa and Allah cleared from what they said. And he was a dignitary with Allah.
The Jalalayn say:
O you who believe do not behave towards your Prophet as did those who harmed Moses — when they would say for example ‘The only reason he does not wash with us is that he has an inflammation in his testicles’ — whereat God absolved him of what they alleged when Moses placed his robe on a rock to go to wash the rock hurtled away with it until it came to a halt amid a group of men from the Children of Israel. As Moses chased it and took his robe to cover himself they saw that he had no such inflammation udra is an inflammation of the testicle. And he was distinguished in God’s sight. An instance of our Prophet s being subjected to hurt was when on one occasion while dividing up the spoils a man said to him ‘This is a division that I do not want to please God!’ whereat the Prophet s became angered and said ‘May God have mercy upon Moses for truly he was hurt with worse than this but endured’ — reported by al-Bukhārī. https://www.altafsir.com/Tafasir.asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=74&tSoraNo=33&tAyahNo=69&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2
Aisha, we understand, was cleared.
S 24:1-22
...I was a young girl and did not have much knowledge of the Quran. I said. ‘I know, by Allah, that you have listened to what people are saying and that has been planted in your minds AND YOU HAVE TAKEN IT AS A TRUTH. Now, if I told you that I am innocent and Allah knows that I am innocent, YOU WOULD NOT BELIEVE ME and if I confessed to you falsely that I am guilty, and Allah knows that I am innocent YOU WOULD BELIEVE ME. By Allah, I don’t compare my situation with you except to the situation of Joseph’s father (i.e. Jacob) who said, "So (for me) patience is most fitting against that which you assert and it is Allah (Alone) whose help can be sought."’ Then I turned to the other side of my bed hoping that Allah would prove my innocence. By Allah I never thought that Allah would reveal Divine Inspiration in my case, as I considered myself too inferior to be talked of in the Holy Qur'an. I had hoped that Allah’s Apostle might have a dream in which Allah would prove my innocence. By Allah, Allah’s Apostle had not got up and nobody had left the house before the Divine Inspiration came to Allah’s Apostle. So there overtook him the same state which used to overtake him, (when he used to have, on being inspired divinely). He was sweating so much so that the drops of the sweat were dropping like pearls though it was a (cold) wintry day. When that state of Allah’s Apostle was over, he was smiling and the first word he said, ‘Aisha! Thank Allah, for Allah has declared your innocence.’ My mother told me to go to Allah’s Apostle. I replied, ‘By Allah I will not go to him and will not thank but Allah.’ So Allah revealed: ‘Verily! They who spread the slander are a gang among you …’ (24.11)
When Allah gave the declaration of my innocence, Abu Bakr, who used to provide for Mistah bin Uthatha for he was his relative, said, ‘By Allah, I will never provide Mistah with anything because of what he said about Aisha.’ But Allah later revealed: --
‘And let not those who are good and wealthy among you swear not to help their kinsmen, those in need and those who left their homes in Allah’s Cause. Let them forgive and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? Verily! Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful.’ (24.22) After that Abu Bakr said, ‘Yes! By Allah! I like that Allah should forgive me,’ and resumed helping Mistah whom he used to help before.
Allah’s Apostle also asked Zainab bint Jahsh (i.e. the Prophet's wife about me saying, ‘What do you know and what did you see?’ She replied, ‘O Allah’s Apostle! I refrain to claim hearing or seeing what I have not heard or seen. By Allah, I know nothing except goodness about Aisha.’" Aisha further added, "Zainab was competing with me (in her beauty and the Prophet's love), yet Allah protected her (from being malicious), for she had piety." Allah was willing to clear these others but not willing to clear its boss?
It seems very likely that the author took the velvet. If Allah existed and was the author's deity, why didn't it provide the name of the offender?
Finally, we have this hadith:
Ibn 'Abbas said that a piece of red stuff was put in the grave of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ).
