Tawd is a mangled form of tur, the Syriac word for 'mountain'. This has come about following a misreading of ܛܘܪ, where the letter ܪ rish 'r' has been misread as ܕ dolath 'd'. The passage betrays the author's use of Syriac source material.

As there is a perfectly good Arabic word for mountain, jabal, there was no need for the author to use a Syriac word, tawd or tur in his novel. Tur itself occurs in the following passages:

S 2:63 And when we took your covenant and raised above you the tur: Take what we have given you with strength and remember what is in it; perhaps you will fear.

S 2:93 And when we took your covenant and raised the tur over you. Take what we have given you with power and hear. They said: We have heard and obeyed. Ibrahim was, we are told, Allah's khalil. In the Bible God says that Abraham was his friend (Isaiah 41:8) but Allah, supposedly God, 'brings Musa (Moses) near as his confidant'?

Agreed on a meeting? Allah met them? Did Allah Come?

S 23:20 And a tree issuing from Tur Sinai, growing grease and a dye for the eaters.

Bring a report from the fire? Bring a brand (with which to warm themselves)?

S 28:46 And you were not at the side of the tur when we called. But as a mercy from your lord that you may warn a people whom no nadhir has come to before you; perhaps they will remember.

The author apparently devised a plural for Sinai. In the other passages, in which the author speaks of the tur, a specific mountain would be meant, or at least intended to be understood by his audience, probably Mt Sinai.
