S 4:163 We have inspired you as we inspired Nuh and the prophets after him and we inspired Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes and Isa and Ayyub and Yunus and Harun and Sulayman and we gave Dawud a Zabur.

Tribes were inspired? Dawud was given a zabur? How many were there?

S 6:84 And we gave him Ishaq and Ya’qub, all did we guide. And Nuh did we guide before and of his offspring Dawud and Sulayman and Ayyub and Yusuf and Musa and Harun. And thus do we reward the good-doers.

Abraham was given Isaac and Jacob as sons, who in the Bible were actually father and son? Abraham, Lot and the 'Brothers' Isaac and Jacob The good-doers are rewarded by being guided? The word kadhalik can mean 'likewise'. So we might translate the last sentence 'Likewise do we reward the good-doers.' Were all these characters not good-doers, perhaps? If they were rewarded, were good-doers too rewarded?

S 21:83 And Ayyub when he invoked his lord: I, harm has touched me and you are the most merciful of the merciful.

'When'; 'Remember'. The author expects his audience to be familiar with stories circulating. They would have heard something about the 'harm' that he had experienced.

S 38:41-44 And remember our slave Ayyub when he invoked his lord: I, the Devil has touched me with distress and torture. /Strike with your foot. This is a cool bathing place and a drink. /And we gave him his family and the like of them with them, a mercy from us and a remembrance for the possessors of albab. /And take in your hand a bundle and hit with it and do not perjure. We found him patient. Excellent was the slave. He is a repenter.

Ayyub has taken a vow to strike his wife a number of times but is apparently having second thoughts. So Allah instructs him to make a bundle. From a Muslim article:

"Concerning the oath that Prophet Job made to lash his wife when he was cured, God revealed something that made it easy on the wife. God revealed to Prophet Job to take a palm branch with 100 leaves and to strike his wife with it once. This would fulfill his vow. God ordered that as a reward to the wife of Job for being so patient with her husband’s illness."

But in Islam it is permitted to break your oath if you think of something better.

By Allah, and Allah willing, if I take an oath and later find something else better than that. then I do what is better and expiate my oath.' "

If you ever take an oath to do something and later on you find that something else is better, then you should expiate your oath and do what is better."

S 38:44 ends "Excellent was the slave. He is a repenter." He evidently died so how is he a repenter? When speaking of those who died, we use the past tense of 'to be' of them. Is he dead yet still sinning? Is he a zombie? Regarding zombies: Dead but not Dead

The Quran doesn't call him a messenger or prophet but see: Still a Messenger and Prophet?

One further thought: We are told that Satan had touched him with torture. Elsewhere in other translations the word in the Quran is translated 'punishment', 'chastisement', etc. Did Satan punish or chastise him?
