S 42:51 And it was not for a human being that Allah should speak to him except by inspiration or from behind a hijab or that he should send a messenger and inspire with his permission what he wills. He is high, wise.

'It was not'? Past tense? Going by this, Allah speaks/spoke to a man by inspiration. This rules out the author for he would supposedly receive 'revelation' by means of bell sounds and sometimes by the appearance of a youth.

Another way that Allah speaks/spoke to a man is/was from behind a veil. This indicates that Allah enters/entered creation and speaks/spoke to him from behind a veil.

Yet another way is/was that Allah sends/sent a messenger. Is/was a messenger sent to another messenger? Does/did a messenger inspire him? Does/did the messenger receive permission to inspire? Or is/was the permission the messenger's? If the inspiring was Allah's, does/did Allah require permission? If so, from whom? Who is high and wise? The messenger or Allah?
