Qarin

The word qarin occurs in some six verses.

S 4:38 And those who spend their monies that people may see and do not believe in Allah or the last day and he who has the Devil for a qarin, then evil was it for a qarin.

S 37:51 A speaker among them said: I had a qarin.

S 43:36 And he who turns away from Al-Rahman’s dhikr, we send him a devil and he is a qarin to him.

S 43:38 Until when he has come to us he has said: Would that there were the distance of the two rising places between me and you! And miserable was the qarin.

S 50:23 His qarin said: This is what is ready with me.

S 50:27  His qarin said: Our lord, I did not make him oppress but he was in far error.

According to S 43:36 above, he who turns away from Allah's dhikr is sent a devil who is his qarin.

Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:

There is none amongst you with whom is not an attache from amongst the jinn (devil). They (the Companions) said: Allah's Messenger, with you too? Thereupon he said: Yes, but Allah helps me against him and so I am safe from his hand [aslama, turned Muslim] and he does not command me but for good.

Qarin appears in the Arabic, and this qarin turned Muslim! If this qarin turned Muslim, what was its religion before? Are jinn born, or do they hatch, as Muslims then adopt the religion of their parents?

In S 6:112 we're told that every prophet was assigned a devil.

And thus did we make for every prophet an enemy--devils of man and jinn, inspiring one another with the ornament of speech in delusion.

Narrated Jundab bin `Abdullah:

Gabriel did not come to the Prophet (for some time) and so one of the Quraish women said, "His Satan has deserted him." So came the Divine Revelation: "By the forenoon And by the night When it is still! Your Lord (O Muhammad) has neither Forsaken you Nor hated you." (93.1-3)

Bukhari 1125
