Shirk

Talk of mushrikun and of 'associating', appear in quran, the word itself appears in about three passages.

S 34:22  Say: Invoke those whom you have claimed instead of Allah. They do not possess the weight of a red ant in the skies or in the Earth nor do they have any share therein and he has no assistant from them.

S 35:40  Say: Have you seen your partners whom you invoke instead of Allah? Show me what they have created of the Earth or do they have a share in the skies? Or have we given them a book and they are on a proof therefrom? Rather, the wrongdoers promise one another nothing but delusion.

S 46:4 Say: Have you seen what you invoke instead of Allah? Show me what they have created of the Earth or do they have a share in the skies? Bring me a book before this or a trace of knowledge if you are truthful.

As quran in a number of passages makes a distinction between mushrikun and the People of the Book, how might Muslims deem worship of the Trinity shirk?

Shirk in non-quranic ahadith:

Ibn 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with them) said:

I heard a man saying: "No, by the Ka'bah." I admonished him: "Do not swear by any thing besides Allah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying, 'He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk'."

[At- Tirmidhi].

[Some 'Ulama' are of the opinion that the words of the Prophet (ﷺ) that "He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirk," are in the nature of extreme admonition. And in fact, it is not Shirk. The same applies to the saying of the Prophet (ﷺ), who said, "showing off is Shirk."]

But:

Abu Huraira reported:

A person came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ). The rest of the hadith is the same as transmitted by jarir but with this addition: By your father, you would get the information.

and:

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Yasar, from Qutailah, a woman from Juhainah, that a Jew came to the Prophet and said:

"You are setting up rivals (to Allah) and associating others (with Him). You say: 'Whatever Allah wills and you will,' and you say: 'By the Ka'bah.'" So the Prophet commanded them, if they wanted to swear an oath, to say: "By the Lord of the Ka'bah;" and to say: "Whatever Allah wills, then what you will."

Farwah bin Nawfal (ra) narrated that:

He came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and said: “O Messenger of Allah, teach me something that I may say when I go to my bed.” So he said: “Recite: Say: ‘O you disbelievers’ for verily it is a disavowal of Shirk.” Shu`bah said: “Sometimes he would say: ‘One time’ and sometime he would not say it.” (Another chain) from Farwah bin Nawfal, from his father: "That he came to the Prophet (ﷺ)" then he mentioned similar in meaning. And this is more correct. [Abu `Eisa said:] And Zubair reported this hadith from Ishaq, from Farwah bin Nawfal, from his father from the Prophet (ﷺ), with similar wording. This is more appropriate and more correct than the narration of Shu`bah. The companions of Abu Ishaq were confused in the narration of this hadith. This hadith has been reported through routes other than this. `Abdur-Rahman is the brother of Farwah bin Nawfal.
