We are told that Musa was given a book.
S 2:53 And when we gave Musa the Book and the Furqan; perhaps you will be guided.
S 2:87 And we gave Musa the Book and sent the messengers after him. And we gave Isa son of Maryam the proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. So has every time a messenger come to you with what your souls do not desire you have been arrogant? So a party you accused of lying and a party you kill.
S 6:154 Then we gave Musa the Book, perfection upon him who did good and a minute exposition for everything and guidance and a mercy; perhaps they will believe in the meeting of their lord.
In S 11:17 we read of Musa's book.: So is he who was on a proof from his lord and reads it, a witness from him, and before it Musa’s book as a guideline and a mercy? Those believe in it and he who disbelieves in it among the parties, the fire is his appointment. So do not be in doubt about it. It is the truth from your lord but most people do not believe.
S 11:110 And we gave Musa the Book but it was differed concerning it. And had it not been for a word that preceded from your lord it would have been decided between them. And they are in suspicious doubt about it.
S 17:2 And we gave Musa the book and made it a guide for the Banu Isra'il: Not to take an agent instead of me.
S 23:49 And we gave Musa the Book; perhaps they would be guided.
S 25:35 And we gave Musa the Book and we put with him his brother Harun as a minister.
S 28:43 And we gave Musa the book after what we had destroyed the first centuries as basa’ir for people and guidance and mercy; perhaps they will remember.
S 32:23 And we gave Musa the Book so do not be in doubt about his meeting. And we made it a guide for the Banu Isra’il.
In S 40:53 we read that the Israelites 'inherited' the book: And we gave Musa the guidance and caused the Banu Isra'il to inherit the book,
S 41:45 And we gave Musa the Book but it was differed therein. And had speech not preceded from your lord it would have been decided between them. And they are in doubt about it, feeling doubt.
S 46:12 And before it is the book of Musa as a guideline and a mercy. And this is a book confirming in Arabic to warn those who have done wrong and good news for the good-doers.
The last verse doesn't actually state that the "book of Musa" was given to him. But what exactly is this book given to Musa? Is this the book that the Israelites 'inherited'? Inherited from whom? Is it the Torah? As Christians and Jews are called the People of the Book, is it the Bible? See my post: On the Term ‘People of the Book’
In S 87:18-19, Ibrahim's and Musa's sheets are mentioned: This is in the first sheets. Ibrahim’s and Musa’s sheets.
If Musa's sheet or sheets is the Torah, where is/are Ibrahim's? Both are supposedly extant. Did Musa have a number of loose sheets which Allah then put together in book form? Or are they something else in separate sheets and not a book?
In S 7:145 some tablets or boards are mentioned: And we wrote for him in the tablets-- of everything an exhortation and an explanation for everything. So take them with strength and command your people to take the best of them. I shall show you the home of the fasiqun.
S 7:150 And when Musa returned to his people angry, sorry, he said: Miserable was what you substituted for me after me. Did you hurry your lord’s affair? And he threw the tablets and took his brother by the head dragging him to him. He said: Mother’s son, the people found me weak and were about to kill me. So do not cause the enemies to rejoice over me and do not put me with the wrongdoing people.
S 7:154 And when the anger had subsided from Musa he took the tablets, and in their transcript is guidance and mercy for those who are afraid of their lord.
If the book that he was given is the Torah, what are the tablets? If the tablets are the Ten Commandments, did Allah write them down and then give them along with other commands in that book? The word for 'tablets' is in the Arabic plural, so three or more. The tablets that the Ten Commandments were inscribed upon were two in number. And what does 'take the best of them' mean? Are some tablets better than the others? May some commands be ignored?
The Quran is 'clear' and 'detailed' so it should explain what the book was and what the tablets were. It's no good going to the 'corrupt' Bible for the answer.
Regarding the Torah, the Law:
S 3:3 He has sent down upon you the book in truth confirming what is in front of him and he sent down the Torah and the Injil
S 3:48 And he teaches him the Book and the Wisdom and the Torah and the Injil.
S 3:50 Confirming what is in front of me of the Torah and to permit for you some of that which had been forbidden to you and I have come to you with a sign from your lord, so fear Allah and follow me.
S 3:65 People of the Book, why do you argue concerning Ibrahim when the Torah and the Injil were not sent down except after him? So do you not comprehend?
S 3:93 All food was permitted for the Banu Isra’il except what Isra’il had forbidden himself before the Torah is sent down. Say: So bring the Torah and read it if you are truthful.
Regarding food, see: Qur'an Difficulty: More Commandments for Disobedience?
S 5:43 And how do they make you a judge when they have the Torah wherein is Allah’s judgment? Then they turn away after that and those are not believers.
S 5:44 We sent down the Torah; therein is guidance and light. The prophets, those who have surrendered for those who were Jewish, judge by it, and the rabbaniyun and the rabbis what they were entrusted with of Allah’s Book and they were witnesses over it. So do not fear people but fear me. And do not buy my verses at a low price. And those who have not judged by what Allah has sent down--those are the kafirun.
S 5:46 And we sent on their tracks Isa son of Maryam, confirming what is in front of him of the Torah, and we gave him the Injil. Therein is guidance and light and confirming what is in front of him of the Torah and guidance and exhortation for the fearers.
S 5:66 And had they established the Torah and the Injil and what has been sent down to them from their lord, they would have eaten above them and below their feet. Among them is a frugal nation and many of them--evil is what they do.
S 5:68 Say: People of the Book, you are on nothing until you establish the Torah and the Injil and what has been sent down to you from your lord. And increases many of them, what has been sent down to you from your lord, in tyranny and kufr. So do not grieve over the kafirun people.
Were the Torah and Injil not 'sent down'? Or were they sent down by a different deity?
S 5:110 When Allah said: Isa son of Maryam, remember my grace upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the holy spirit when you speak to the people in the cradle and in middle age. And when I taught you the book and the wisdom and the Torah and the Injil. And when you create from the clay as the form of the bird with my permission and blow into it and it is a bird with my permission and you heal the blind man and the leper with my permission and when you bring out the dead with my permission. And when I restrained the Banu Isra’il from you when you brought them proofs and those who disbelieved of them said: This is nothing but obvious magic.
S 62:5 A similitude of those who were burdened with the Torah then did not bear it is like the similitude of the donkey that carries Scriptures. Miserable was the similitude of the people who called Allah’s verses a lie. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
S 7:157 Those who follow the messenger, the ummi prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Injil. He commands them kindnessand forbids them baseness and declares lawful for them the good things and declares unlawful for them the bad and lays their burden from them and the shackles that were on them. So those who have believed in him and aided him and helped him and followed the light that was sent down with him, those are the successful.
S 9:111 Allah has bought from the believers their souls and their monies because theirs is the Jannah. They fight in the way of Allah. They kill and are killed. A promise upon him, a law, in the Torah and the Injil and the Quran. And who is more faithful to his covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your sale which you have contracted. And that, it is the great win.
S 48:29 Muhammad is Allah’s messenger and those with him are severe against the kuffar, merciful among them. You see them bowing, doing sujud, seeking favour from Allah and pleasure. Their mark is on their faces from the trace of sujud. That is their similitude in the Torah. And their similitude in the Injil is like a seed, its shoot has come out then it has strengthened it then it has become thick and has ascended on its stem pleasing the sowers that he may enrage the kuffar by them. Allah has promised those who have believed and have done the righteous deeds among them forgiveness and a great wage.
S 61:6 And when Isa son of Maryam said: BanuIsra’il, I am Allah’s messenger to you, confirming what is in front of me of the Torah and as one giving the good news of a messenger coming after me, called Ahmad. But when he came to them with the proofs they said: This is obvious magic.
S 62:5 A similitude of those who were burdened with the Torah then did not bear it is like the similitude of the donkey that carries Scriptures. Miserable was the similitude of the people who called Allah’s verses a lie. And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
What passage states that the Torah is the book given to Musa; what passage actually states that it was given to him? Surah al-Maa'ida 5:44
Muslims will say that we should not eat pork and refer to the Torah; but in S 40:53 'the book', whatever that is, is 'guidance' (not even law) for the Israelites, and they may take the 'best' of the tablets or what is in them, so perhaps the rest can be chosen or rejected according to whim.
