In this post we shall be looking at occurrences of these three names.
S 2:125 And when we made the House a resort for people and security. And take from the station of Ibrahim a musalla. And we covenanted to Ibrahim and Isma’il: Purify my house for the circumambulators and those devoted and those who bow, those doing sujud.
S 2:127 And when Ibrahim raises the foundations of the House, and Isma’il. Our lord, accept from us. You are the hearer, the learned.
S 2:132 And Ibrahim imposed it upon his sons, and Ya’qub: My sons, Allah has chosen the religion for you so do not die except when you are Muslims.
S 2:133 Or were you witnesses when death attended Ya’qub, when he said to his sons: What will you worship after me? They said: We shall worship your god and the god of your fathers, Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq, one god. And we are Muslims to him.
In S 12:37 we read: He said: Food you are provided with does not come to you but I have informed you of its interpretation before it comes to you. That is of what my lord has taught me. I have left the cult of a people who do not believe in Allah and they in the hereafter, they are kafirun.
The historical Joseph was Jacob's son and he supposedly said that he would worship Jacob's god, supposedly Allah, but in the verse above he says that he left the cult of a people that didn't worship Allah. However in S 12:38 we read:
S 12:38 And I have followed the cult of my fathers, Ibrahim and Ishaq and Ya’qub. It was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is of Allah’s favour upon us and upon people but most people are not grateful.
Was he once an apostate then went back to worshipping Allah? See my post Cult
S 2:136 Say: We have believed in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes and what was given to Musa and Isa and what was given to the prophets from their lord. We do not distinguish between any of them. And we are Muslims to him.
Who were the tribes? Were Musa and Isa not prophets?
S S 2:140 Or do you say: Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes were Jews or Nasara? Say: Are you a knower or is Allah? And who is more unjust than he who has concealed a testimony he has from Allah? And Allah is not unaware of what you do.
S 3:84 Say: We have believed in Allah and what was sent down upon us and what was sent down upon Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes and what was given to Musa and Isa and the prophets from their lord. We do not distinguish between any of them and we are Muslims to him.
S 4:163 We have inspired you as we inspired Nuh and the prophets after him and we inspired Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes and Isa and Ayyub and Yunus and Harun and Sulayman and we gave Dawud a Zabur.
S 6:84 And we gave him Ishaq and Ya’qub, all did we guide. And Nuh did we guide before and of his offspring Dawud and Sulayman and Ayyub and Yusuf and Musa and Harun. And thus do we reward the good-doers.
S 6:86 And Isma’il and Alyasa and Yunus and Lut and all did we prefer to the ‘alamin.
Weren't all these of one of the 'alamin, the worlds?
S 11:71 And his woman standing and she laughed. Then we gave her good news of Ishaq and behind Ishaq Ya’qub.
Jacob was Isaac's son. Did the unnamed Sarah give birth to her grandson?
S 12:6 And thus does your lord choose you and teach you of the interpretation of the ahadith and complete his grace upon you and upon Ya’qub’s family as he completed it upon your two fathers before, Ibrahim and Ishaq. Your lord is learned, wise.
S 12:38 And I have followed the cult of my fathers, Ibrahim and Ishaq and Ya’qub. It was not for us to associate anything with Allah. That is of Allah’s favour upon us and upon people but most people are not grateful.
See note to S 2:133 above.
S 12:68 And when they had entered from where their father had commanded them it did not avail them against Allah at all but a need in Ya’qub’s soul that he had executed. And he is a possessor of knowledge because we had taught him but most people do not know.
Who is a possessor of knowledge? Ya'qub? But didn't he die and wasn't he buried centuries ago?
S 14:39 Praise be to Lah who has given me in old age Isma’il and Ishaq. My lord is the hearer of invocation.
S 19:6 Inheriting me and inheriting from Ya’qub’s family. And make him, lord, pleasing.
Can someone be inherited? Would Zechariah inherit from all the descendants of Jacob?
S 19:49 So when he walked away from them and what they worship instead of Allah we gave him Ishaq and Ya’qub and each did we make a prophet.
Abraham became father to his grandson? Were there two prophets operating at the same time? Whom were they sent to?
S 19:54 And mention Isma’il in the book. He was true to the promise and was a messenger, a prophet.
What book is the author to mention Isma'il in? Quran? But didn't Allah supposedly write what we know as quran?
S 21:72 And we gave him Ishaq and Ya’qub as a redundancy and all did we make righteous.
Abraham was the father of his grandson?
S 21:85 And Isma’il and Idris and Dhul-Kifl, all of the patient.
Is Isma'il still alive, but no longer a prophet?
S 29:27 And we gave him Ishaq and Ya’qub and we put in his offspring the prophethood and the book. And we gave him his wage in the dunya. And he in the hereafter is of the righteous.
Gave whom Ishaq and Ya'qub? Ibrahim or Lut? Why isn't Isma'il (Ishmael) mentioned?
S 37:112 And we gave him good news of Ishaq, a prophet among the righteous.
S 37:113 And we blessed him and Ishaq. And of their offspring is a good-doer and an obvious wrongdoer for himself.
No mention of Isma'il. Of their offspring, Ibrahim's and Ishaq's? But wasn't Ishaq Ibrahim's offspring?
S 38:45 And mention our slaves Ibrahim and Ishaq and Ya’qub, the possessors of hands and eyesight.
S 38:48 And mention Isma’il and Al-Yasa’ and Dhul Kifl and all are of the best.
