The Devil Up the Nose and In the Ear

Narrated Abu Huraira:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "If anyone of you rouses from sleep and performs the ablution, he should wash his nose by putting water in it and then blowing it out thrice, because Satan has stayed in the upper part of his nose all the night."

The Arabic has Al-Shaytan 'THE Devil'. As there are millions of people asleep at any one time, the Devil would be in the nose of all of these sleepers. There is not the slightest indication that this is to be taken figuratively. Allah's boss says that the water is to be put up the nose and blowing it thrice. Now, this can be dangerous, particularly in areas where the water supply is contaminated. And why thrice?

'Abdullah (b. Mas'ud) reported that a mention was made of a man who slept the whole night till morning. He (the Holy Prophet) remarked:

That is a man in whose ears (or in whose ear) the devil urinated.

Again, the Arabic says the Devil. Like Allah, and its angels, the Devil is a physical being and can urinate. It also has a penis and a vagina. See: Satan’s Genitalia Although with this hadith one could argue that he was being facetious, it is not necessarily so.
