The name Yunus is given a number of times in quran but does the said book identify him?
S 4:163 We have inspired you as we inspired Nuh and the prophets after him and we inspired Ibrahim and Isma’il and Ishaq and Ya’qub and the tribes and Isa and Ayyub and Yunus and Harun and Sulayman and we gave Dawud a Zabur.
Was Nuh a prophet? He was supposedly the first messenger. And it doesn't say 'the other prophets'. Whole tribes were inspired? Does being inspired mean that he was a prophet? After all, we're told that Musa's unnamed mother was inspired, and what Muslim would call her a prophetess? Notice that Dawud was given a Zabur and not the Zabur.
S 6:86 And Isma’il and Alyasa and Yunus and Lut and all did we prefer to the ‘alamin.
They were preferred to the worlds? But weren't they of this world?
S 10:98 So were it not that a village had believed and its faith benefited it except Yunus’ people? When they believed we removed the torture of disgrace from them in the dunya life and amused them for a time.
So Mecca didn't believe and its faith didn't benefit it? Can you disbelieve and have faith?
S 37:139 And Yunus is of the commissaries.
Yunus is of the commissaries?
Muslims will claim that Dhul Nun is Yunus/Jonah.
S 21:87 And Dhul Nun when he went angry and thought that we would not have power over him. Then he invoked in the darknesses: There is no god but you. Praise be to you! I was of the wrongdoers.
There is a reference to 'the companion of the whale'.
S 68:48 So be patient for your lord’s judgment and do not be like the companion of the whale when he invoked while he was confined.
Narrated Abu Hurairah:
"In the market of Al-Madinah, a Jew said 'No! By the One who chose Musa above all humans.'" He said: "A man from the Ansar raised his hand and struck him in his face. He said 'You say this while Allah's Prophet (ﷺ) is among us?' So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said 'And the Trumpet will be blown, and all who are in the heavens and all who are on the earth will swoon away, except him whom Allah wills. Then it will blown another time and behold, they will be standing, looking on (39:68). So I shall be the first to raise his head and there will be Musa holding on to one of the supports of the Throne. So I will not know if he raised his head before me, or if he was one of those whom Allah made the exception for. And whoever says: 'I am better than Yunus bin Matta, then he has indeed lied.'"
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Once while a Jew was selling something, he was offered a price that he was not pleased with. So, he said, "No, by Him Who gave Moses superiority over all human beings!" Hearing him, an Ansari man got up and slapped him on the face and said, "You say: By Him Who Gave Moses superiority over all human beings although the Prophet (Muhammad) is present amongst us!" The Jew went to the Prophet and said, "O Abu-l-Qasim! I am under the assurance and contract of security, so what right does so-and-so have to slap me?" The Prophet (ﷺ) asked the other, "Why have you slapped". He told him the whole story. The Prophet (ﷺ) became angry, till anger appeared on his face, and said, "Don't give superiority to any prophet amongst Allah's Prophets, for when the trumpet will be blown, everyone on the earth and in the heavens will become unconscious except those whom Allah will exempt. The trumpet will be blown for the second time and I will be the first to be resurrected to see Moses holding Allah's Throne. I will not know whether the unconsciousness which Moses received on the Day of Tur has been sufficient for him, or has he got up before me. And I do not say that there is anybody who is better than Yunus bin Matta."
