What does it mean to be cursed by Allah? How might one be cursed? Muslims like to invoke curses upon us but what do they hope to happen? A number of cursing passages:

S 2:88 And they have said: Our hearts are a wrap. Nay, Allah has cursed them for their kufr, so little is what they believe.

S 2:89 And when a book came to them from Allah confirming what they have, and they used to ask before for victory over those who disbelieved, so when what they knew came to them, they disbelieved in it. So Allah’s curse is on the kafirun.

So a Muslim who disbelieves in the Bible is an accursed kafir.

S 2:159 Those who conceal what we have sent down of the proofs and the guidance after what we made clear to people in the book--those, Allah curses them and the cursers curse them.

S 2:161 Those who have disbelieved and died while they are kuffar, those, upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and people, all.

S 3:61 So he who argues with you about it after what has come to you of knowledge, say: Come, let us call our sons and your sons and our women and your women and ourselves and yourselves then let us execrate and put the curse of Allah on the liars.

How might one himself put Allah's curse on someone?

S 3:87 Those, their recompense is that upon them is the curse of Allah and the angels and the people altogether.

Allah's curse is insufficient? Are the curses of all the parties equal? If the curses of people and of angels are invoked, is Allah's?

S 4:46 Of those who were Jewish, they corrupt the words from their places and say: We have heard and disobeyed and: Hear not having been heard and: Raina, distorting with their tongues and a stab into the religion. And had they said: We have heard and obeyed and: Hear and look at us, it would have been better for them and more appropriate. But Allah has cursed them for their kufr so they do not believe except a little.

S 4:47 Those who have been given the Book, believe in what we have sent down confirming what you have before we efface faces and repel them onto their backsides or curse them as we cursed the companions of the Sabbath! And Allah’s command was done.

S 4:52 Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed and he whom Allah curses, you will not find a helper for him.

S 4:93 And he who kills a believer intentionally then his penalty is Jahannam, abiding therein indefinitely. And Allah was angry with him and has cursed him and has prepared for him great torture.

What about him who kills a disbeliever intentionally?

S 4:118 Allah has cursed him and he said: I will take from your slaves an obligatory share.

An obligatory share?

S 5:13 So because of their criticism of their covenant we cursed them and made their hearts hard. They distort the words from their places and forgot a share of what they had been reminded of. And you still discover a traitress among them except a few of them. But pardon them and reform. Allah loves the good-doers.

S 5:60 Say: Shall I inform you of worse than that as a reward from Allah? Those whom Allah cursed and got angry with and made of them monkeys and pigs and worshipped the taghut. Those are worse in position and more astray from the evenness of the way.

S 5:64 And the Jews have said: Allah’s hand is manacled. Their hands have been manacled and they have been cursed for what they have said. Rather, his hands are outstretched. He spends how he wills. And he shall increase many of them, what has been sent down to you from your lord, in despotism and kufr. And we have thrown enmity and hatred among them to the day of resurrection. Every time they have kindled a fire for war Allah has put it out. And they chase corruption in the land. And Allah does not love the corrupters.

S 5:78 Those who disbelieved of the Banu Isra'il were cursed by the tongue of Dawud and Isa son of Maryam. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress.

S 7:38 He said: Enter among nations that passed away before you of jinn and men in the fire. Every time a nation entered it cursed its sister until when they had overtaken one another in it, all, the last of them said of the first of them: Our lord, these misguided us so give them double torture of the fire. He said: For all is double but you do not know.

S 7:44 And the companions of the Jannah called to the companions of the fire: We have found what our lord promised us to be true. So have you found what your lord promised to be true? They said: Yes. Then a caller called among them: Allah’s curse is upon the wrongdoers,

S 9:68 Allah has promised the male hypocrites and the female hypocrites and the kuffar the fire of Jahannam, abiding therein indefinitely. It is their reckoning. And Allah has cursed them and theirs is lasting torture.

If the torture is merely lasting, how long does it last for?

S 11:18 And who is more unjust than he who has fabricated a lie against Allah? Those are presented before their lord and the witnesses say: These are the ones who lied against their lord. Indeed, Allah’s curse is upon the wrongdoers.

S 11:60 And they have been followed in this dunya by a curse and on the day of resurrection. Indeed, Ad disbelieved their lord so away with Ad, Hud’s people!

S 11:99 And they have been followed in this by a curse and on the day of resurrection miserable was the gift provided.

S 13:25 And those who break Allah’s covenant after his compact and cut what Allah has commanded to be joined and corrupt on the Earth. Those, theirs is the curse and theirs the evil of the home.

S 15:35 And upon you is the curse to the day of judgment.

S 17:60 And when we said to you: Your lord has encompassed people. And we did not make the dream which we showed you but fitnah for people and the cursed tree in the Quran. And we frighten them but it does not increase them except in big oppression.

S 24:7 And the fifth that Allah’s curse may be upon him if he were of the liars.

S 24:23 Those who accuse the muhsanat, the unaware, the believing women, have been cursed in the dunya and the hereafter. And theirs is great torture.

S 28:42 And we caused a curse to follow them in this dunya, and on the day of resurrection they are of the maqbuhun.

S 29:25 And he said: You have only taken idols instead of Allah out of affection among you in the dunya life. Then on the day of resurrection you renounce one another and curse one another and your abode is the fire and you have no helpers.

S 33:57 Those who harm Allah and his messenger, Allah has cursed them in the dunya and the hereafter and he has prepared for them base torture.

S 33:61 Cursed wherever they have been met with, taken and massacred.

S 33:64 Allah has cursed the kafirun and has prepared for them a blaze,

S 33:68 Our lord, give them double the torture and curse them greatly!

S 38:78 And upon you is my curse to the day of judgment.

S 40:52 A day their excuse does not benefit the wrongdoers and theirs is the curse and theirs the evil of the home.

S 47:23 Those are the ones whom Allah has cursed so he has made them deaf and blinded their eyesight.

S 48:6 And that he may torture the male and female hypocrites and the mushrikun and the mushrikat who think evil assumption of Allah. Upon them is the circle of evil and Allah was angry with them and he has cursed them and has prepared for them Jahannam and bad was a destiny.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas:

A man cursed the wind. The narrator Muslim's version has: The wind snatched away a man's cloak during the time of the Prophet (ﷺ) and he cursed it. The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Do not curse it, for it is under command, and if anyone curses a thing undeservedly, the curse returns upon him.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:

"Cursed be the slave of the Dinar, cursed be the slave of the Dirham."

It was narrated that 'Abdullah said:

"May Allah curse Al-Mutanammisat and who have their teeth separated. Shall I not curse those whom the Messenger of Allah [SAW] cursed?"

Narrated Ibn `Abbas:

I heard `Umar saying, "May Allah Curse so-and-so! Doesn't he know that the Prophet (ﷺ) said, 'May Allah curse the Jews for, though they were forbidden (to eat) fat, they liquefied it and sold it. "

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "Doesn't it astonish you how Allah protects me from the Quraish's abusing and cursing? They abuse Mudhammam and curse Mudhammam while I am Muhammad (and not Mudhammam).

Why might Allah need to protect him from abuse and cursing? Did Allah have to get them to mangle his self-assumed name in order to protect him from it? Why didn't it protect him from being assassinated?

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w) said:

"Lo! Indeed the world is cursed. What is in it is cursed, except for remembrance of Allah, what is conducive to that, the knowledgeable person and the learning person."

Abu Bakr As-Siddiq narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:

"Cursed are those who harm a believer, or plot to do so."

What about those who plot to harm a disbeliever, as Allah's boss did?

Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah said:

"The believer is not one who curses others."

'Abdullah bin 'Amr narrated:

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who bribes and the one who takes a bribe."

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the women who imitate men and the men who imitate women."

Narrated AbuHurayrah:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the man who dressed like a woman and the woman who dressed like a man.

Abud-Darda' (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "When a person curses somebody or something, the curse goes up to heaven and the gates of heaven get closed. Then it comes down to the earth and its gates get closed. Then it turns right and left, and if it does not find an entrance to go anywhere, it returns to the person or thing that was cursed; if he or it deserves to be cursed; otherwise it returns to the person who uttered it." [Abu Dawud].

It was narrated from Aishah that the Prophet said:

"May Allah curse people who take the graves of their prophets as Masjids."

A mosque is built over the grave of Allah's boss.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Umar that:

The Messenger of Allah [SAW] cursed the woman who affixes hair extensions.

Narrated Hudhayfah:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who sat in the middle of a circle.

Narrated Samurah ibn Jundub:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: Do not invoke Allah's curse, Allah's anger, or Hell.

Why did he invoke curses and why do Muslims invoke them?

Jabir b. 'Abd Allah reported the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) as saying:

Do not invoke curse on yourselves, and do not invoke curse on your children, and do not invoke curse on your servants, and do not invoke curse on your property, lest you happen to do it at a time when Allah is asked for something and grants your request.Abu Dawud said: This Hadith has a continuous chain of narrators, 'Ubadah bin Al-Walid bin 'Ubadah (did) met Jabir.

But did he not call for Mubahala? See my post above.
